About this listen

In this haunting short story of loyalty and betrayal, a young woman in early 1900s Massachusetts discovers that in navigating her treacherous coming-of-age, she must find her voice first.

For fatefully observant Adeline, growing up carries an ominous warning from her adulterous mother: don’t say a word. Adeline vows to never speak again. But that’s not her only secret. After her mother takes a housekeeping job at a lighthouse off the tip of Cape Ann, a local woman vanishes. The key to the mystery lies with Adeline, the silent witness. New York Times bestselling author of The Rules of Magic Alice Hoffman crafts a beautiful, heart-wrenching short story.

Alice Hoffman’s Everything My Mother Taught Me is part of Inheritance, a collection of five stories about secrets, unspoken desires, and dangerous revelations between loved ones. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single setting. By yourself, behind closed doors, or shared with someone you trust.

Good listen

Great story with excellent description and narration. the emotions of the main character are well portrayed and makes you feel both her subtelty and intensity in her thoughts.

way too short, beautiful story

This is a short story beautifully told, and it's historical fiction. The narrator was good. It really would be much better if it were longer.

wish it was a longer book

I enjoyed this so much that I wish it was a big full book. At 1st I was a little apprehensive and almost stopped listening because it was a bit sad and depressing, but then it got interesting and had a good moral.

Pretty good

I liked the story line, and the setting descriptions. Pretty good short story, I kind of wish it had more.

Great performance

The narrator with dairy, very good, added to the story with her expresses performance. I could have listened to an entire book read by her.

Short & Sweet

perfect bedtime story that presents the crisis, protagonist works through crisis, crisis hits boiling point and the mess is all cleaned in the ending.

very interesting

a very interesting perspective on lessons learned by the daughter of a woman who never wanted to be a mother. Makes you wonder why we constantly force women into motherhood if they don't want it.

good but short

The story was very interesting and well written, however I wish it was longer and had more depth to the story.

A tale of woe

I didn t realize it was a short story, so my surprise when it ended. I could follow the story and picture the harsh conditions described by the author.
