About this listen

John Clayton III, an orphan boy, comes of age in the western coastal jungles of Africa following the tragic deaths of his aristocratic parents. Raised in the ways of the apes by his adoptive mother, Kala, he is renamed Tarzan and ascends to king through feats of revenge and courage.

When a group of explorers brings the beautiful Jane Porter to the jungle, a lovelorn Tarzan decides to follow her to the United States to win her love. On his journey back into human society, Tarzan must decide whether to return to the jungle or reclaim his past.

Fast-paced and suspenseful, Tarzan of the Apes was wildly successful and generated two dozen sequels; and many film, radio, and comic-book adaptations.

AmazonClassics brings you timeless works from the masters of storytelling. Ideal for anyone who wants to read a great work for the first time or rediscover an old favorite, these new editions open the door to literature’s most unforgettable characters and beloved worlds.

A Great Classic

For anyone whose only knowledge of "Tarzan of the Apes" is of the "me Tarzan, you Jane" variety, you know nothing of the story.
From his parents being left in the jungle where no men, black or white, have been to his life from infancy to adulthood with the anthropoid apes and then to the arrival of his own kind, the story leaves you on the edge of your seat. With great attention to detail, the descriptions make you feel as though you are right there with the characters. No movie has ever done it justice.
The narrator brings this book to life. He does a fantastic job switching from English, American, Southern and French accents, whether male or female.
I highly recommend the Audible version of this book.

What a great adventure!

All the movies made of Tarzan are only LOOSLY made according to the book. Disney of course was the worst even though I liked it. I think ERB deserves someone to do this story justice and make it true to his story. we have "Planet of the Apes" and P.O.T.C. series, Tarzan has so many stories it would make a great TV series if not a trilogy of each book. Disney didnt do A PRINCESS OF MARS any favors, they screwed that Amazing story up pretty bad even though I liked some of it but missed it by a long shot.

If there was anyone with the guts to do TARZAN and the JOHN CARTER series right this could be as big as LOTR and the M.I. series. Is there ANYONE who will except this call? or will hollywood continue to rinse and repeat the same old stories of horror and sex.

I HAVE SPOKEN.

wish Hollywood would have kept to the book

Tarzan of the Apes has been so ingrained in our culture that we think we know him. We know him not. Well, at least I didn't know him and his original story.

Of course one has to discount the times in which his tale was written. Society and science was not even close to what we are now, therefore, despite probably some modifications that this edition could have already been through, we still see prejudice and lack of knowledge throughout the tale.

Some of the facts could never have been true and a Man-Ape like him cannot exist as described.

Taking all this into consideration, however, this is a wonderful story! Well written, gripping and leaves us wanting to know more of his accomplishments, how he got to be what his becomes at the endo of the novel and what else will happen in this tale of growth, love and adventure!

Grag a rope, throw up to nearest branch and come swing with the one and only Tarzan!

I didn't know Tarzan

It’s a great cliff hanger with great description of the jungle hero. I was surprised that Tarzan was a well speaking man of both English and French.

I finally know the true story of Tarzan’s beginning
