Izzy Lawson has taken her last abuse.
When her husband dies, she has a choice to make: Go home, and face the family who made her stay with the beast, or head to Belle Fourche to the only friend she has left. The reserve she's worked so hard to build crumbles in the verdant rolling hills, and in the arms of a man so different from her husband.
Conrad Oleson can't read, and it's shamed him for longer than he can remember.
When another teacher shows up on his front step, he's sure his brother is meddling, again. But when Izzy reveals her painful past, he can't stay away. And if learning to read brings him closer to her, he'll do about anything for her including teaching her how to love.
Don't miss this sweet western cowboy romance. Can a widow scarred by her husband finally get her happily ever after? This book was originally published in the Timeless Love: Romantic Stories That Span the Ages collection.

Very realistic. I loved the way the characters were portrayed.
Many of us have troubled pasts, many of us still have troubled presents.
It is always good to hear of someone that treats you as you should be treated... With Love and kindness no matter the past you have had forced on you or chosen to live. Make your own choice and choose to love.

The characters are well developed and the descriptions are clear and easy to picture. I enjoyed the style of writing and ti dialogue comes across as natural.
I've read other books in the series and reading this one filled in the gaps for me. It was enjoyable to listen to and did a good job of setting up the series.
The narration includes good character voices, smooth clear delivery, and it matched the story nicely.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

In this story, Issy (Isabelle) is just starting to heal from a distructive marriage when she comes to stay with her dear friend Lula and Lula's in-laws. At the O ranch she meets Conrad, the eldest brother of Lula's husband Barton. This is a delightful story of how two people can build each other up by encouragement and love. And of course the author threw in some suspense to keep the storytelling moving at a wonderful pace.
Storyteller J Scott Bennett is perfect for these Western Romances. I have enjoyed several audiobooks narrated by him. His voice is true, trusted, and tender just like what is called for with wholesome, clean western romances.

When her husband died, she left immediately without even arranging a funeral, there was very little money but she did have his horse so she packed what she could into the saddlebags and set off to visit her friend in Belle Fourche. She is starved and weak, the beast she married having withheld food from her telling her she was too large, so when she finally arrives she literally falls into Conrad's arms. Conrad is the brother in law of her friend and the oldest of the brothers living on the ranch. Conrad is alone, he's never found someone to love and although his family is close he is lonely,
Conrad cannot read, he believes that he has managed to keep this a secret from his family but he hasn't, they just never bring in up. As Izzy begins to regain her strength, her friend tells her about Conrad and asks her to try to teach him to read without hurting his pride by letting him know that the family all know his secret.
Over time a bond forms between Conrad and Isobelle, yes I'm calling her Isobelle now because that's what Conrad calls her. Conrad learns that he can trust her to help him and she learns that not all men are monsters. I loved the way Kari Trumbo wrote these characters, she made them both strong but she wrote with such sensitivity to their situation.
The storyline flowed beautifully, we learned about a plot to harm the ranch and the brothers. The story has both action and drama but the fundamental feeling I had whilst listening to this story was one of wellbeing and love as Hope learned to like herself and became the woman she should have been all along. As for Conrad he was just perfect for her, he knew just how to treat her and helped her to heal.
The narration of this book by J. Scott Bennett is very well done, he performed it with just the right amount of sensitivity.
I was given this audiobook as a gift and am voluntarily writing my review.

This was a nice listen-to. The characters were likable, minus the bad guys, and there was that happy ending. There wasn’t anything really surprising or shocking that took place, yet it was a fast, sweet story. Although, with me not always paying attention to what number a book holds in a series, I was actually surprised this was book one. I could see the author going back and writing a story (prequel) about how Izzy’s best friend and her husband ended together.
As always, the narrator did an awesome job! I’m a big fan of Mr. Bennett!
I’m definitely interested in reading or listening to more in this series.
