About this listen

Teacher Misery perfectly encapsulates the comical misery that has become the teaching profession. Jane Morris's strange, funny, and sometimes unbelievable teaching experiences are told through a collection of short stories, essays, and artifacts including real emails from parents, students, and administrators.

From the parents who blame their son's act of arson on the teacher for causing him low self-esteem, to the student who offers to teach the teacher how to sell drugs so she can pay her bills, to the administrator whose best advice is to "treat kids like sacks of shit", one story is more shocking than the next.

An important audiobook for teachers and non-teachers alike, Teacher Misery paints an amusing and thoroughly entertaining picture of what has become of our education system, without detracting from the overall point that what teachers have to put up with today is complete, utter, unacceptable insanity.

True but disparaging

I have experienced many of the things this author describes throughout my teaching career. Her stories are sadly accurate and true. This book will be eye opining for anyone who has not been in the teaching profession. I do, however, take issue with is her pseudonyms for parents and students. I assume she is aiming to be funny but misses the mark and instead weakens her argument by appearing bitter and petty when recounting parent and student interactions.

Factual. Brave. I feel validated.

Brutally honest. This is teaching in America. And yet, I wouldn't do anything else. Highly recommend for all new teachers and veterans.

The honesty

This novel is filled with so much honesty. She uses humor to tell truths of teaching but never says that teaching children is not worth the struggles. I recommend every teacher read.

3rd year teacher

I’m a third year teacher (having only ever taught during the pandemic) this book made me feel a lot less alone.

Must Read

Non-educators should read/listen to this book. Provides interesting and embarrassingly true narrative of what many Professionals must endure daily!

A lot of boring unedited emails in their entirety

I appreciate that this book exists, but there were a lot of pretty uninteresting documents apparently with no editing or commentary, for instance, a psychologist's recommendations for very normal accommodations for Asperger's syndrome.

So real I got PTSD

I taught foe 25 years. Some of these parent meetings and kid lies retraumatized me. A series of anecdotes rather than narrative at times.

Relatable AF!

This authors stories had me in stitches. Relatable! I literally got stares as I laughed out loud as I listened during my walks, while sitting on the beach and chilling on the couch with my family! This book represents teacher reality. Teacher Misery offers support to any teacher suffering with feelings of isolation as they wonder about their own laundry list of wtf anectodal incidents that have left them bewildered and shocked at teacher reality. Listen while sitting pool side, drinking your favorite alcoholic beverage on your overpaid long summer break! Like me, you will not want it to end.
