Publisher's summary

"Joshua T. Calvert has a gift for making nail-biting science fiction that you can't put down. Get ready for some sleepless nights!"—M. A. Rothman, USA Today bestselling author

In Lake Maracaibo, in the northwestern part of Venezuela, a long-hidden extraterrestrial artifact underneath the ocean floor triggers a disaster. The United States military launches an expedition, sending a cutting-edge team of international researchers to the source of a magnetic instability that's destroying any electronics in the region.

Inside the large artifact is a chamber that's large enough for the researchers to enter. After a shocking death, the scientists from the United States, Europe, and Russia realize that it is a teleportation device. But they soon face a fundamental question: Why do those who enter the chamber fall into a coma? Are they traveling to other places, or is it all just an illusion? Dream or reality, the other side of the teleporter turns out to be a hell that puts not only the team, but the entire project to the test—because they are not alone out there.

A New World

Excellent story, well balanced with content full of challenges met and reward earned. Looking forward to new directions the author will take us toward in books two and three.

Stargate with a dip of Event Horizon

So I should preface, I adore Stargate as a series, from start to finish.
This means I am a purist at heart, and thus my thought is coming from that.

This is a series that is the basic plotline of Stargate, more so the movie, the Pilot, and Season 1 Finale and Season 2 Premier, it just is. There is a literally a character called Kawalsky, and doses of Stargate Nods sprinkled in.
However you can feel the plot does try to pull away from that, as best it can.
The Stargate or "Object" is woefully different mechanism for transport, which is wear the "Event Horizon" theme comes in. Thus directly because of that, we do get some of the coming to life moments one would expect, and something that I enjoyed with Stargate, the message behind the story. This is just a wee bit darker. I liked this book series personally, the performance was a bit rough at first, yet ya get used to that and it seemed to get better.
I am interested on the next steps, given we are well off the rails at the end of the series, I really enjoyed the mystery and the changes in the characters, interested to see where everything goes. I think if you enjoy a decent story with a stargate plot that does get a little creepy you'll like this.

Good story

Give the narrator a B+. He was very good but something about his voice seemed a bit monotone to me. Looking forward to book 2

Poor sequel

I'm so glad Audible allows you to reverse purchases. I get very sad when I love the first book in a series, only to find the author headed off in a completely different direction with the second. This is not a bad book, I just found it disappointing in the context of a series.

A large part of this book is devoted to filling in the backstories of the team of scientists with James. Why, and why now? Strong undertones of how badly humanity screwed up - I don't like socio-political agendas in my sci-fi. Then throw in a few ancient Egyptian clichés and that was where I asked for my credit back.

Narrator still great, generally well written and all that, just not a good sequel to an awesome first book. If you love Atlantis and Ancient Egypt origin stories, go for it.

Almost had me

It was a great story in the beginning but quickly fell apart. Major holes and a lot of jumping around. Just plain weird at the end.

Starts out interesting but,

Started out interesting, but got very boring. I think the author was planning three books of which this was only the first if that’s the case the first is convinced me not to read the remaining two.

I was hoping to listen to the whole series

I like sci fi that's not a bunch of space battles, so when this poped up I thought I might enjoy the series. The intro was ok and somehow worked into a fish out of water situation. Alright, I'm suspending disbeleif and let's roll with it. Then the meat of the story started, and it was pretty good, BUT then the author just got too unbelievable with a character dodging the entire Air Force and "slipping" away off a military base, seriously. Ok were still rolling. Then the character spouted a bunch of fantasy-type quests for the main character to achieve, handed over the "Amulet" and committed suicide, Wait What, why didn't that character help the protagonist with the quests, why kill yourself. That was just silly.
So I'm somewhat ok with fantasy quests, but I don't seek them out, and I really thought I was getting into some cool sci-fi, but the author turned from The Matrix to Lord of the Rings. with the whole, "You must destroy the children of the elders and break the sacred wall of onyx" type crap. I ended up shutting it off about an hour before it ended

Sample was cool. Book turned into pining over an ex.

So much time spent on this guy thinking about / talking about his ex, I couldn’t stand it and had to stop listening.
