About this listen
An epic first-contact story on a galactic scale.
Humans have reached the stars. There is no evidence any other species survived its own sentience long enough to do the same. Until now, when the Magellanix deep-space scout Accipiter discovers the Artifact, a million-year-old alien construct resting in a dormant volcano on a faraway world.
Now, TransGalactic has sent the Carpathia to steal it. Two ships, two rival corporations, and a race only one of them can win.
The stakes are greater than they seem. The Artifact is more than just a technological marvel. It holds the key to humanity's survival, and—perhaps—an understanding of our place in the universe at last.

Nobody remembers how the Causality War started. Really, there's no-one to remember and nothing for them to remember if there were; that's sort of the point. We were time warriors and we broke time. I was the one who ended it. Ended the fighting, tidied up the damage as much as I could. Then I came here, to the end of it all, and gave myself a mission: to never let it happen again.

Dalton Greaves is a hero. He’s one of humankind’s first representatives to Unity, a pan-species confederation working to bring all sentient life into a single benevolent brotherhood. That’s what they told him, anyway. The only actual members of Unity that he’s ever met are Boreau, a giant snail who seems more interested in plunder than spreading love and harmony, and Boreau’s human sidekick, Neera, who Dalton strongly suspects roped him into this gig so that she wouldn’t become the next one of Boreau’s crew to get eaten by locals while prospecting.

The Hygrometric Dehabitation Region, or the "Zone," is a growing band of rainforest on the equator, where the heat and humidity make it impossible for warm-blooded animals to survive. A human being without protection in the Zone is dead in minutes. Twenty years ago, Marks went into the rainforest with a group of researchers led by Doctor Elaine Fell, to study the extraordinary climate and see if it could be used in agriculture. The only thing she learned was that the Zone was no place for people. There were deaths, and the program was cut short. Now, they're sending her back in.

Equipped with the entirety of human knowledge, a sentient ship is launched on a last-ditch journey to find a new home for civilization. Trillions of miles. Tens of thousands of years. My name is Gary Rendell. I'm an astronaut. When they asked me as a kid what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said, "astronaut, please!" I dreamed astronaut, I worked astronaut, I studied astronaut. I got lucky; when a probe exploring the Oort Cloud found a strange alien rock and an international team of scientists was put together to go and look at it, I made the draw. I got even luckier. When disaster hit and our team was split up, scattered through the endless cold tunnels, I somehow survived. Now I'm lost, and alone, and scared, and there's something horrible in here. Lucky me.

But a demon is terrorizing the land, and now she's an adult (albeit barely) with responsibilities (she tells herself). So she is bitterly disappointed when the first images are obscured by a kind of veil that prevents any insight. She works obsessively to find a solution, but when she finally succeeds in lifting the veil, she sees something that would have been better kept hidden...

Good story overall. Weak ending.
The performance is not up to Tim’s normal standard, with some of the voices very similar to each other. This book is listed as hard science, but without the details that normally put something in this category. The ending feels like a precursor to a second book rather than a full conclusion.
The story is better than average, but it could have been better

Good Story, Well Read
I had to think about this audible book after listening to it over 4 days. First of all, the story is good, having kept my interest throughout - although there were several overlong parts that threatened to drag the whole down. The narrator did a pretty good job breathing life into the population of the book although some of his voices seemed a bit arbitrary and perhaps ill fitting to the character.
Having prefaced my review by the above, I nonetheless recommend this book for its novel premise through to its well done finish. Hopefully there will be more coming in the future for these characters, specifically, and from the author with other well thought out books.

I loved the storytelling. Better conceived than most modern novels. I hope Paul Dixon writes a lot more.

A story folded and unfolded
This was a very interesting book series. I enjoyed the consistent challenge to thought patterns and scenarios. There were some instances where it was unclear where the story would go, as story lines were kept separate. I continued on with the story, and the pieces began to fall into place. Thank you for the passing of time, and considerations to work through.

Surprisingly Tremendous!
The world-building and empathy for the disparate characters gets you to invest in the story way more than if it was simply plot or sci-fi driven...
Well-written & well-narrateted as well!

Best of the best sci-fi
I’ve been reading and listening to sci-fi audiobooks for over 40 years. This book is in the very top tier of sci-fi. Arthur C. Clarke is smiling somewhere in another dimension.

Satisfying
Reminded me of older classic sci fi. Asimov ish. A bit devoid of aliens but humans have evolved in interesting ways. And of course there is the grand Alien. Great character development.
