About this listen

An epic first-contact story on a galactic scale.

Humans have reached the stars. There is no evidence any other species survived its own sentience long enough to do the same. Until now, when the Magellanix deep-space scout Accipiter discovers the Artifact, a million-year-old alien construct resting in a dormant volcano on a faraway world.

Now, TransGalactic has sent the Carpathia to steal it. Two ships, two rival corporations, and a race only one of them can win.

The stakes are greater than they seem. The Artifact is more than just a technological marvel. It holds the key to humanity's survival, and—perhaps—an understanding of our place in the universe at last.

Good story overall. Weak ending.

The performance is not up to Tim’s normal standard, with some of the voices very similar to each other. This book is listed as hard science, but without the details that normally put something in this category. The ending feels like a precursor to a second book rather than a full conclusion.

The story is better than average, but it could have been better

Good Story, Well Read

I had to think about this audible book after listening to it over 4 days. First of all, the story is good, having kept my interest throughout - although there were several overlong parts that threatened to drag the whole down. The narrator did a pretty good job breathing life into the population of the book although some of his voices seemed a bit arbitrary and perhaps ill fitting to the character.

Having prefaced my review by the above, I nonetheless recommend this book for its novel premise through to its well done finish. Hopefully there will be more coming in the future for these characters, specifically, and from the author with other well thought out books.

Excellent

I loved the storytelling. Better conceived than most modern novels. I hope Paul Dixon writes a lot more.

Surprisingly Tremendous!

The world-building and empathy for the disparate characters gets you to invest in the story way more than if it was simply plot or sci-fi driven...
Well-written & well-narrateted as well!

A story folded and unfolded

This was a very interesting book series. I enjoyed the consistent challenge to thought patterns and scenarios. There were some instances where it was unclear where the story would go, as story lines were kept separate. I continued on with the story, and the pieces began to fall into place. Thank you for the passing of time, and considerations to work through.

Original and captivating

I'm rarely inspired to write book reviews. I don't even remember how it is that I came to have this book in my library, but I knew by the end of the first chapter that I was fully committed to the story. The character building in particular is subtle and rich, growing and continuing through the last paragraph.

I am left wanting more, and I'm sad that it's over.

Very interesting g characters and strong engaging plot

I really enjoyed this book; also the narrator was fantastic. The characters were unique and I found myself caring about their outcomes. I really dis not want this story to end. Nice balance of speculative science and human plot-lines. I will definitely read the next SF by Dixon

An Ideas and Thought Story

Carpathians was an interesting and thought provoking story without a lot of action. Not a ripping yarn but there were enough ideas and mysteries to keep me interested.

Terribly unresolved! Ala Lost series nearly.

Terrific story with so much potential, great characters, fantastic worlds….and then a terribly disappointing ending with absolutely bo resolutions for neither of the 5 main issues the author opens during the story. Sad to see it wasted like that.
