About this listen

Making time to talk with your son is one thing; knowing what to talk about is another.

Every parent of a teenage boy knows there are certain conversations they must have with their son, but they often put them off - or worse, don't have them at all - because they simply don't know where to start. Written by Dr. Tim Hawkes, one of Australia's top educators, Ten Conversations You Must Have with Your Son offers a practical, accessible, and invaluable way to get these discussions started.

Dr. Hawkes provides parents with the essential information they need to negotiate their way through what can often be very difficult territory about the why, what, and how of 10 key topics: love, identity, values, leadership, achievement, sex, money, health, living together, and resilience. Each topic has its own chapter and offers ideas about different ways for parents to share their own experiences and knowledge with their boys.

Having been a headmaster for 25 years and an internationally recognized expert in the field of raising and educating boys, Dr. Hawkes is in a unique position to know what goes on inside the minds of teenage boys. He understands what they need to know to best prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities, challenges, and demands that life will make on them.

Ten Conversations You Must Have with Your Son is a great guide for anyone needing help in preparing a son for adulthood.

One of the best parenting books, I have listened to or read. Covers a lot of topics relevant to raising well adjusted young men.

Enjoyed it!

One of the best parenting books I have encountered, full of practical advices and insightful observations. I listened several times and will return to it again and again.

Excellent, highly recommend

After spending a few weeks listening to the audio book, I got to the chapter about "marijuana" use and immediately turned it off and deleted it from my library. Claims are wildly inaccurate. Would not recommend.

Embarrassing Misrepresentation of the Cannabis Plant

It's an interesting listen and I was able to take 1 or 2 takeaways that I might use. He does say upfront that he's not an expert. Well that's definitely true. When the content got to video games, he says that violent games cause violence in children. There have been multiple studies done on this which have proven that there is no correlation between video game violence and real world violence. I can't help but wonder what other debunked or preposterous things the author claims as fact. Also, the reader speaks with all the charm of a weevil crawling in your ear and it's all I can do to keep from turning it off not to have to hear him talk.

Edit: Even worse than I originally thought. As I continued listening there were many incorrect statements and wild claims. I finally had enough when the author claimed the Challenger explosion was from a lack of sleep rather than the faulty O-Rings. The fault was actually well known but ignored despite refusals to sign off due to safety concerns.

Narration sub-par. Wild claims, false statements.

If you’re a single mom looking for guidance with your teen sons, I can’t say much because I couldn’t make it past the hero complex this dad lays out in the first ten minutes. Seems to target fathers who can’t spend time with their kids due to work, pressure of providing for the family, and other manly responsibilities. Ugh.

Couldn’t take more than 10 minutes - dad hero is not the perspective a single mom needs
