About this listen

Two years have passed since humankind faced extinction: Cousins Brian and Steven are leaving the protection of their underground bunker for the first time, after a cataclysmic war and unrelenting disease ravaged the earth. On the other side of North America, a young survivalist is leaving the seclusion of his cabin deep in the woods, traveling with his aging canine companion, Winston. For individual reasons, these men are traveling east, where the fragmented lives of a small number of survivors will soon be decided by the choices of a corrupt few. Simon Kalispell and Brian Rhodes are not yet aware, but the strength that resides inside them will soon be tested, and destiny will call for their fates to be forever intertwined.

Love these books

My number one favorite of all the books are the ones on post apocalyptic stories. This author does that to a T. He describes everything so that when I close my eyes I’m there, I feel and see everything through the words of the narrator. Excellent story, I would recommend this book To everyone. Thank you to the author and the narrator, great job

First audio book, sets the standard high.

It was my first audio book, I didn't really know what to expect. I didn't have time to sit and read a book, so I listened to this one to and from work everyday. Once the story kicked up I found myself sitting in my driveway not wanted to go inside, I had to know what happend next. I don't want to spoil any parts for possible listeners but there were so many times I cheered on Simon, or cussed out nick or Carl. Was fantastic, the bar is set, I'm so excited to listen to the next book.

Great dystopian read.

What did you like best about this story?

The character development.

What does James Romick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The characters and scenes really came to life. I particularly liked the voice he used for Nick Byrnes.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The last scene, the war, was intense. For me, it was the climax of the novel and the characters.

Excellent Story!

This is a very well written post apocalyptic type tale. The narrator cannot pronounce certain words properly, but if you can ignore that, it's quite enjoyable.

Good ending!!!!!!

This is the complete series and is well worth the credit. I cannot imagine being in a log cabin all by yourself for 2 years. Or in a shelter with the same person day in and day out for 2 years. Then to emerge to find the world so changed. Only to get were you are going to become embroiled in a war. Very interesting listening and the narrator, James Romick gave a good performance in The After War.

Amazzzing !!!

What an incredible story, truly amazing.
At the beginning when there was talking about a disease I was oh not another Zombie story and to my surprise it had nothing to do with zombies, thanks god or thanks to Brandon Zenner the author.
It was 15 hrs 26mins of pure masterpiece, impossible to put down.
Easy 5 stars to the story but the narration was just ok and is getting 3 stars because you could hear the narrator breathing in between sentences which is probably not his fault, in professional studios the microphone separates the readings and the breathing cleaning it up, so my advice to the author is to remake the recording like many other authors who have done just that and have doubled if not more the selling of their audiobooks ( and now when you go their page at Audible you’ll still have the option to get the older or the newer recordings of the same audiobooks, sometimes by different narrators ) and I can name a few of them and their audiobooks.
In all it gets 4 stars because it’s truly a remarkable story which grabs you so powerfully that you stop noticing the not so good narration.

Absolutely full heartedly
recommend this audiobook for
all !!!

Bad narration

Great story line, great character development, the ending left unfinished business. The narrator was abysmal. I almost stopped listening but because the story caught me I finished it.

Gripping post apocalyptic story.

What made the experience of listening to The After War the most enjoyable?

The story and narration are excellent. I could envision the desolate environment, and the characters grabbed me from the beginning.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Winston. Without a doubt. I fell in love with him, and was concerned for his safety the entire time. Karl Metzger was also a particularly frightening character.

What does James Romick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I've read the book as well as listened to the audiobook. The narrator did a great job of creating voices for the various characters, and setting the dystopian environment.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The story is suspenseful at times, sad at others. The post apocalyptic environment, and the roving bands of society's wastes were frightening.

Any additional comments?

The story grabbed me from the begging, but really takes off a few chapters in. The ending war scene is gripping.
