Publisher's summary

For reclusive germophobe, Frank Talbot, dealing with his crippling fear of contamination and germs has always been a challenge, but now he may have no choice.

After a mysterious outbreak of a highly lethal virus ravages the globe and hundreds succumb to the contagious illness, the US government instigates a cordon sanitaire in major cities to contain it from spreading rapidly around the nation.

At the onset of the epidemic, his ex-wife, Kate, an epidemiologist for the CDC, warns Frank and their daughter, Ella, to prepare for the worst. The only hope of survival is retreating to their cottage on one of the isolated islands in the St. Lawrence River.

Desperation breeds anxiety. Their survival depends on fighting back and they're determined to survive.

different take

this was a refreshingly different take on same topic.
I love this Genre but find at times the same apoc story is being told just with different names.

nope, not here! these are definately average people. At times the story or characters didnt follow even the most basic of common sense, so I'm not sure if the characters were meant to be just stupid or if that is really how Northern people are.

I did like the conflict of personal issues counter acting external issues. that was a nifty perspective.

I wasnt fond of the narrator, he was okay.

bottom line I would recommend the book just tell people to listen at 125 to avoid the droning from the author, however, that may also be a northern people speech pattern. Meh, give it a listen and you decide.

It’s like the apocalypse version of What About Bob

I really enjoyed this book. My only complaint would be the difference in characters was a little confusing in the narration but wasn’t really that big of a deal. Great story great audiobook

voices were hard to listen to

the character voices were annoying and the main character was former military but didn't act like it at all to the point of unrealistically annoying

Decent

As someone with OCD (though not a germaphobe), I understood the main character to a degree.

I found many of the characters confusing. The leaps in “logic” they made bugged me. I began to wonder if it’s a regional cultural difference with me being southern and this taking place in upstate NY and Canada. (Attitudes towards self defense and blaming others for thief situations got really annoying)

Aside from that, the premise was good. Being from the standpoint of someone with OCD was a nice twist. Narrator was decent. He doesn’t make my top 5, but he wasn’t impossible to listen to likes some.

Very slow start but got a lot better.

The book started out slow and in an uninteresting way for me. I almost gave up but I was on a 6 hour drive and kept listening. For me, it got alot better as I listened. Overall good story line and great narrator. Get past the introduction and you'll be set for a good story.

Condescending character voices and characters that just wont get it

Very frustrating to listen to as the narrator made everyone sound condescending. Further the author wrote characters that deserved to die from plain stupidness. I mean there is normalcy bias and some have it worse than others, but it is unrealistic to have th bulk of the characters to exhibit to such a degree and still survive. Frustrating to listen to when the. Story and narration each could have been so much better. Can only assume that this was an inaugural effort.

Characteristics of The Narrator

The Narrator needs to practice in-depth variables in linguistic patterns otherwise wouldn't sound much like snob reading be ok after reviewing a revision of course, good storyline although bounces around with even hint of details to follow, that said it's a good story to lead in too more.

Not Bad! I give the story 2 1/2 stars!!!!

Honestly its not a bad apocalyptic novel, but its not the greatest I've ever read either. Its actually a trilogy that has been put into a complete collection which is alot better then spending 3 credits, 1 for each individual book, so I'm glad they combined them into 1 novel. Plot was OK, but was for sure lacking in many areas, the characters were so back and forth especially the main character that it was hard to care about him, or any of the others, that honestly at the end it really didn't matter who lived or died because I didn't feel connected with any of them. The build up to the main event lasted the whole last novel, then was over in seconds with no real resolutions just those certain thugs dead, that's it. Its hard to explain without giving anything away which is why I don't normally leave reviews especially when I'm not impressed with a book, but I guess my main thing is that I don't feel like it was a waste of a credit, it's worth a read, just don't go into it expecting anything other then a mediocre story, something decent to pass the time but don't go expecting a Sarah Lyons Fleming story either because its nowhere near that good. It's just OK, but yes worth reading!!!!!
