About this listen

Oil supplies begin to vanish without a trace and society starts to crumble!

While on vacation sailing the waters of the Puget Sound, geophysicist Alex Cave hears a mayday call on the radio and sees a brilliant flash of neon-blue light surround an oil tanker. He changes course to help and discovers there was no explosion, there's no one on board, and the oil has mysteriously vanished without a trace.

The bodies of the missing crew are found hundreds of miles away in the snow on Mount Baker, but there are no footprints leading in or out of the area. Oil starts to disappear around the world, and the only clue is a dollar-size crystal found in the hold of an empty oil tanker.

The situation gets bad when sudden freezing temperatures cause weather patterns to change for the worse and threaten a catastrophe that will affect the entire world. The situation goes from bad to worse when an alien artifact discovered on one of the Aleutian Islands is stolen and taken to COBRA, a private top-secret research facility south of Yellowstone National Park. The scientist in charge has no idea what she’s dealing with and things go horribly wrong.

Ok story, Titles are misleading

The focus of 90% of the story is on interpersonal conflicts, Russian mafia and human caused danger.
Technical descriptions don’t expand much beyond the word ‘devices’

Good read, looks to be a good series

Dead Energy (Alex Cave, #1), my first read from author James M. Corkill.
Cold Energy (Alex Cave, 2), my second read from author James M. Corkill.
Red Energy (Alex Cave, #3), my third read from author James M. Corkill. Well-written and captivating with well-developed main characters reminding one of Christopher Cartwright’s Sam Reilly writings. I received an Audible copy of Pandora's Eyes (The Alex Cave Series, Book 5) back in March of this year & wanted to read the series in order so I bought this book. Paul J. McSorley’s narration adds to the book's enjoyment. I'll be reading more from this author. Next up, Gravity (The Alex Cave Series, Book 4). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

I am now a huge Alex Cave fan!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I absolutely loved these three books! The plots draw you in right from the start. Very different, uniquely fresh ideas. Its part sci-fi, part mystery, part action, all engrossing. The main character Alex is very likable. Hes very flawed, very normal seeming, at first, bad ass. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to these three stories and cannot wait to get to listen or read more!
The narrator is amazing. The story flowed very beautifully. His voice is very nice to listen to. emotions were belivable. Over all its five stars from me!
I very much appreciate the opportunity to listen and review!

great narrating, okay writing

Writing:

I enjoy James M Corkill ability to tell a GREAT story and I hope he continues to write. His writing draws you in to the story and keeps you engaged. My grip is that he employs outdated stereotypes of people that are less than credible and almost lost me at some points except that Paul J. McSorley is one of my favorite narrators and really nailed the voice acting in this book. But back to Corkill. In the first book, there are two women fighting over the hero and he likens them to cats. No. Just no. Action adventure novels have females in that fan base and they need to be written for also. In the three books I listened to, women were always throwing themselves at men or having inner dialogue pertaining to this aim. It had me cringing at times.

In my opinion, Corkill has one of the hardest part of writing down pat: The ability to tell a great story. So much so, you want to stay up all night to get to the end. I believe his writing could really improve with a good editor. Corkill's writing kind of reminds me of an early Clive Cussler.

Narration:

Paul J. McSorley nails it. I wanted to listen to this series based on the narrator and I wasn't disappointed. McSorley is a professional who knows his stuff. His changes in voice accents are consistent. I like that his character voice changes aren't drastic. Narrators will sometimes use really deep voices or really high voices and you can hear the strain in their voice. This can yank the reader 'out' of the story because the narration has become distracting. McSorley does an incredible job of keeping the reader immersed in the story. McSorley IS Alex Caves. I can honestly say that I only finished this trilogy because of Sorley's narration.

Dead Energy: I'm not going to go into the story too much as I think this is covered in the publisher's blurb. I liked the writing in this book probably the best of the three. It felt like more time was spent on it. Corkill wrote from the view of two characters and how they eventually cross paths. There were some inconsistencies that could have used a good editor (i.e. Cave will sleep with one woman but won't with another because of his grief for his late wife?) Corkill provides a HEA for most couples written about although one female character did a complete 180 in a very short space of time.

Cold Energy and Red Energy: As the description states, these two books need to be read together. The story gets a bit complicated. In my opinion, the last part of Red Energy involving Russians could have been left out and easily fleshed out into another book. Again there were female characters who constantly threw themselves at the hero. The time travel was done fairly well in my opinion as it avoided monotonous repeats of information.

I think if I had been reading these books, I wouldn't have finished. Having Paul J. Sorley narrating really elevated the series. I enjoy a narrator that can make me forget I'm being read to and Sorley does just that.

This collection is superbly written and the narration is excellent. I listened to the entire series in just 2 sittings because I just couldn't bring myself to hit that pause button.

Great adventure si-if!

The author does a wonderful job weaving this series together! A little bit action/adventure a little bit science fiction. I highly recommend this series. The story is wonderfully executed and the narration is well done. Kind of Indiana Jones meets Xfiles. I look forward to seeing where the story goes from here!
