About this listen

While the allied nations fight back against the Third Reich in the spring of 1945, an American Army base in Poland is ambushed, leaving only five US soldiers alive. After spotting enemy reinforcements on the horizon, they find a trap door leading to an underground series of tunnels into the unknown.

The SS hot on their tail and a maze of passageways before them, the Americans must rely on an escaped Jewish girl to help them find their way to freedom.

Brutal and Compelling with Fantastic Narration

The narration and sound effects made this story for me. This is not a story I probably could have finished as it is so intense, but I was so engaged by the narration and the sound effects that really painted a strong picture in my mind of the dangerous environment and situation the characters were in. Interesting and intense experience!

Saving private ryan vibes

One of my favorite movies of all time, this book channels those feelings very well. The ugliness of war is very much apparent in this book and makes me appreciate the sacrifices all the more

some books deserve more than 5 stars!

Wow...this book, with it's sound effects, kept me so entranced...it was like watching a movie in my head! Yes, it is fantastic and the narration...really, I couldn't hear anything from my surroundings...it was THAT good!
In the spring of 1945, a small American Army base in Poland is attacked by the German army. Out of 55 men, only 5 survived and they are on the run for their lives. They discover a trap door in an abandoned building that leads to a series of underground tunnels. There they meet a young Polish girl, who's twin was a victim of Dr. Joseph Mengele's experiments. With the aid of the girl, Claudia, the soldiers attempt to escape the Germans. The non-stop action is riveting and, again, the sound effects in this audiobook, really made you feel as if you were present. If you love history and tales of war, then this is for you. I really love the ending...someone met a fitting end.

Great Listening Experience

While the subject matter is a difficult one the story captured my interest from the beginning. The narration and sound effects heightened the experience. I would definitely recommend this book to friends.

The Angel of Death's Abyss

I've never listened to a book with sound effects before. I'm on the fence about it, but overall I think it helped set the mood.

The story can be a bit gruesome at times, but nothing horrid. I enjoy war books and this is no exception. It had a good plot for a short story and plenty of action to keep me listening. A great listen for a medium car ride.

an excellent engrossing read

This book kept me riveted. I would have gotten more cleaning done if the book had not been so good. The storyline kept moving, kept you questioning what you thought you knew, and never once did my mind wander from it.

I did not notice when I purchased the book that there were sound effects and music. I am not normally a fan of things like that but these were done subtly enough that they did not distract from the book at all and Blended well.

The narrator for this book was fantastic. he has excellent German accent and pronunciation, his voice was comfortable to listen to even when parts of the book were uncomfortable. I would definitely seek out this narrator again to listen to other books he has done.

I would also definitely look for this author and find other items he has written.

Disturbing, Gritty and Interesting

Not a story for the faint- hearted. It describes Nazi scientists exactly as you picture them - demented masochists.

Josh Horowitz did an amazing job on narration. Makes me wonder if he is fluent in German and Polish. The sound effects really added to the story without being a distraction.

Outstanding Reality-Based Fiction!

The notorious Nazi doctor, Josef Mengele, performed all kinds of grisly experiments on people (including twins), and was known as the the 'Angel of Death'. As referenced in the title, this story is a fictionalized drama of a few Allied soldiers and their run-in with Mengele and the Nazi regime. The fact that this book is reality-based fiction is a huge feature here, because it puts you right in the fight, along with the horrors of the Mengele's experiments. The author guides us on a journey which is an almost therapeutic fictionalized drama of perseverance, with an edifying resolution.

Josh Horowitz is an excellent narrator, whose excellent vocal register allows the words to tumble out smoothly, with no distracting fry tones or awkwardness. His character-acting and emotion are on-point, and his accents (especially the German accent) are superb.

This book had me in its grip until the and was just the right duration. Highly-recommended!

Wunderbar......
