I have had dogs my whole life. My family bred, raised, and showed dogs for competition and I thought I knew just about everything about raising a dog. Having read this book I realized how much I still needed to learn. My wife and I rescued an emotional troubled dog, but I read this book (twice) and use the techniques to train our dog. She is now universally loved by everyone who meets her and will sit, lie down, bark, and high-five on command. She is great with children and we couldn't imagine life without her. If you are getting a dog, READ THIS BOOK, before you buy your dog, and then again when you train your dog, and you will develop a happy and healthy relationship with your dog too.

This starts with a good overview, but then goes into how-to manual mode, which is great, but not necessarily the best book to listen to, rather than read.

Good, but maybe the paper copy is better

I was looking for a good "basic" dog training book with a focus on first steps with a new puppy. This was exactly what I was looking for. The overall approach is loving, firm, and takes into account natural dog instinct.

Wonderful first puppy book

Not enough practical advice but still nice. You get a basic idea of how to teach your dog but you dont get a full toolbox.

Nice book to start with

The monks of New Skete present a ton of information in this short and small book about puppy rearing. The book covers considerations before adopting, how to get the puppy started, developmental changes to expect and some trouble shooting for problem behaviors.

As can be expected, primary points are about consistent schedule and expectations, regular exercise and quality nutrition as the foundation for a healthy and happy pup. This is not a positive reinforcement type of training, as the monks advocate leash corrections. However, the book includes thorough explanation of the correcting procedure, a small discussion of their philosophy and a warning against over correcting.

Informative, concise puppy guide book

Provides valuable information to the dog owner, while introducing good techniques in teaching puppies rather than hitting them or beating them. For me, its worth listening to more than once.

Fortunately the book was full of solid advice - most backed up by good rationale to help it stick in the listeners head. Highly recommend

This book delves into what dog owners can do to match training to dog comprehension. Either you will train your puppy, or she will train you. Step-by-step direction for helping your pup focus on what you want her to do. Pitfalls and pathways around common puppy assimilation problems are shared. The monks tell us how to (and how not to) raise your puppy as a companion.
