Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

Story
As a SEAL on combat deployment in Iraq, Mike Ritland saw a military working dog in action and instantly knew he found his true calling. While the SEAL teams had used dogs in the past, they never had dogs trained specifically by SEALs, for SEALs. To fill this void, Ritland started his own company after he retired, training and supplying dogs for the West Coast SEAL teams. He knew that less than 1% of all working dogs had what it takes to contribute to the success of our nation’s elite combat units. He searched the globe for animals who fit this specific profile.

Generations of dogs have been labeled training lemons for requiring actual motivation when all along they were perfectly normal. Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

Out of the Dark!
Great book by Pat Miller. It is a wonderful perspective of the change in training that has happened in the last 15-20 yrs. And the reason why. Having come from the dark side myself I can appreciate her journey to TPPDT. I have recommended this book to new first time dog owners or owner wannabes. All dogs deserve to have had their owners read this book(among others). Well read by Susan Boyce(and no she is not condescending ). Please read OTHER END OF THE LEASH as well. These two books dovetail well together. You'll be happy you did and so will your canine companions!

I loved how she used examples of dogs she has met in her own life. It made it easier to follow. However, as an audio book, it can get rather repetitive to hear each training suggestion in a row with no breaks in the book.

Very insightful book
Overall a very insightful book with regards to dog training. What I liked most about this book was that it is build upon the current science of dog training, utilizing the principles of neuroplasticity. The book doesn't directly advertise this, and that I don't understand. The author clearly has some research in this field, but mostly just chalks it up to, "This is what I find works best." Another major positive to this book is that it provides step-by-step instructions on how to do teach a variety of behaviors, correct poor behaviors, and what do to when conventional training isn't working. On top of that, she shows you how to do all of this in a way that is never mean to the dog. It is not an obligation to make the dog fear you to teach her.
There are some minor problems in the book. Most notable to me is how the author likes to rename the dog in her example to a name very similar to the trick that she's trying to teach. For example, "When you want Jumper to jump do this." The author probably thinks it sounds cute but it's really just confusing.
