About this listen

Fully revised and updated for the 2020-2021 financial year

This is the only money guide you'll ever need.

That's a bold claim, given there are already thousands of finance books on the shelves.

So what makes this one different?

Well, you won't be overwhelmed with a bunch of "tips" or a strict budget (that you won't follow).

You'll get a step-by-step formula: open this account, then do this; call this person, and say this; invest money here and not there. All with a glass of wine in your hand.

This book will show you how to create an entire financial plan that is so simple you can sketch it on the back of a serviette...and you'll be able to manage your money in 10 minutes a week.

You'll also get the skinny on:

  • Saving up a six-figure house deposit in 20 months
  • Doubling your income using the Trapeze Strategy
  • Saving $78,173 on your mortgage and wiping out seven years of payments
  • Finding a financial advisor who won't rip you off
  • Handing your kids (or grandkids) $140,000 checks on their 21st birthdays
  • Why you don't need $1 million to retire...with the Donald Bradman Retirement Strategy

Sound too good to be true? It's not.

This book is full of stories from everyday Aussies—single people, young families, empty nesters, retirees—who have applied the simple steps in this book and achieved amazing, life-changing results.

And you're next.

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

Editorial reviews

Whether you’re looking to save up enough money to put down a deposit on a house or find a financial adviser who’s actually trustworthy, it’s safe to say that achieving financial objectives can feel like an insurmountable challenge. But with the guidance of Scott Pape, The Barefoot Investor himself, your most ambitious money goals can become a reality.

This guide isn’t filled with unachievable budget demands or plans that are impossible to actually put into action. Rather, Pape distils his most pragmatic money advice into five easy-to-follow steps. Aussies can rest assured that they have the most up-to-date information on who to call, where to invest and what to say to achieve financial freedom once and for all. As he’s known for his work on radio and television, it’s no surprise that Pape is a masterful storyteller and narrator — his rich, warm voice brings to life stories from real life Australians, demonstrating the changes in money habits needed to grow and sustain wealth.

I liked the book, it has some of the very important statistics and advice, although first half was much more interesting.
Narration was done good, personally I don't like that much emotion in an audiobook but that's subjective.
I definitely recommend this book to people that want to learn to manage their finances, especially in Australia. If you are from some second or third world country this rules do not apply so just skip this book.

overall very inspirational

The barefoot investor is like a conversation with a rich relative who happily shares the steps they took to financial security. It's simple, conversational and effective. Unlike other wealth management books, Barefoot doesn't waffle on with theory, it provides the actual steps you can take to gain control of your money so it grows and grows... kind of like planting a money tree :)

Inspiring and informative. A must read.

Some areas of the book are specific to Australia but most are applicable to anywhere.

Australia focused

Most of The Barefoot Investor is sound advice. Yes, tax laws, investing particulars, home buying is somewhat different, but the majority of the theory is applicable anywhere. Plant. Grow. Harvest.
Making a date night with your partner weekly then monthly to specifically talk about financial issues and what dreams y'all have. Eradicating debt. Not being afraid of the stock market (which was a huuuuge one for me. Pape points out how, despite recessions/depressions/wars, things just bounce back. Period.). Buying your own home, but if you're renting, that's okay--just start saving as much of the difference between what you'd be paying in mortgage and taxes and rent as you possibly can. Determining your retirement number/age based on your savings (without spazzing about being older and nowhere near there).
I'm a finance idiot, so this is where I'm coming from as I write this review. I know Audible has a plethora of money-savvy people, so Pape's info might not be extraordinarily mind-blowing. But hey: Anything that makes me stop hyperventilating when I consider my financial situation? Well, that's definitely worth the barely 6+ hours listening time...!

Sure It's An Aussie Book But--

As an American, I was skeptical over how much of this book would actually apply to me. However, even though there were differences (like between a superfund and 401(k) / IRA) there were still a lot of good tidbits ... and some great ones.
I highly recommend the book, even if you're not Australian. You just may have to do some work how it exactly applies to you.

Great financial advice ... for Aussies

This is the only money guide you'll ever need. Literally. The book describes a very clear roadmap that leads you from debt to financial Independence. Every step is very concrete and it's very well fundamented.

The book is filled full of great strategies for getting out of debt & how to have a great retirement. The only problem I found was that I do not live in Australia. Therefore, the investment strategy is not possible. I did enjoy the fun analogs that were used to make points. I just wish before I purchased the book that a clue could of been given that to utilize the plan in this book, you need to live in Australia.
