About this listen

A would-be queen. A handsome young king. A perfect match...or is it?

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Selection series comes The Betrothed, a glittering royal romance sure to captivate her legion of loyal fans and lovers of courtly intrigue alike.

When King Jameson declares his love for Lady Hollis Brite, Hollis is shocked - and thrilled. After all, she's grown up at Keresken Castle, vying for the king's attention alongside other daughters of the nobility. Capturing his heart is a dream come true.

But Hollis soon realizes that falling in love with a king and being crowned queen may not be the happily ever after she thought it would be. And when she meets a commoner with the mysterious power to see right into her heart, she finds that the future she really wants is one that she never thought to imagine.

A new series to escape into
Since quarantine began, YA romance has become my ultimate comfort. I’m re-listening to old favorites, and basking in the hope (and drama) of new love stories. Kiera Cass’ The Selection series has always been a fun one to dive back into, and now that I’ve finished re-listening to it for the umpteenth time, I’m so grateful Cass is back with a brand-new series for me to get lost in. The Betrothed follows Lady Hollis Brite, girlfriend to King Jameson, and likely future Queen of Coroan. But the future she can see so clearly is called into question when a young man from a neighboring country shows up at court and (literally) catches Hollis’ eye. Narrator Jasika Nicole is a new voice for me, and I’m eager to listen to how she handles the drama and glamour of court alongside the angst of young love. And, of course, if I’ll wind up on Team Jameson or Team Silas.

There are a number of cringe moments, but overall it's very captivating and I kept wanting to listen just a little bit longer. I wish the narrator made the male characters a little more likeable in their voices, and the females less whiny, but it took very little away from the storylines.

narrator meh, great story

The romance was not intricate, or built very well. It was Still an enjoyable book though. I liked some of the characters, but a few fell flat

Not as good as the selection but still good

it was okay.
not as memorable as others.
hated the narrator at first, but it ended up alright.
Love this author- very wonderful ideas for stories, just wish they had more substance. May change my review to something else after reading the second book.

I knew Cass was going to defy all of my expectations. But I could never have imagined by how much! Once again, a new voice to get used to in Jasika Nicole, but then Hollis is a brand new character who should stand out on her own.

⚖️ Plot: I had no idea what I was getting into. Twist upon twist takes you to a place you never expected to be. So much heartbreak, yet satisfying nonetheless. That’s a great talent of Kiera Cass.

🗺 World: A wonderful era of lords and ladies, whilst being one where many injustices could be gotten away with. Truly well balanced with a whole cast of characters who are light and dark at the same time.

💑 Characters: Let’s take a moment to appreciate the names in this book. Hollis, Jameson, Delia Grace... so unique and full of charm. I never trusted Jameson, but I still want him to be happy. I can’t wait to see what Hollis does next. So many possibilities now that she is royalty on the other side of the realm!

Shocking. Shattering. Spectacular.

I’m a fan of Kiera Cass...but I literally wanted to smack every single character in this book. Literally no one was like able
Wish I didn’t waste a credit on it .

I loved it. I always hated to put it down. Only con for me was when it ended. I wanted more. I am not sure why so many people wrote such negative reviews. I also thought Hollis was a spoiled little rich girl. She was young and frivolous, but I think she had to grow up pretty quick and accept the consequences of her decisions. I'd have hated to have to make that kind of decision. Riches or love? Disappoint everyone (friends, parents, country, king) or marry a man you don't love? All without any support system. Her parents...or should I refer to them as gold diggers...they don't care about their daughter's happiness at all. They just want to have the prestige that comes from being the queen's parents. Not to mention her so called best friend (also a gold digger) who also uses her for a boost to her status quo. Despite not liking her much at the beginning of the book, Hollis grew on me. Who ever said that the main character has to be the best person? If you believe that, you better not read the newest Hunger Games book about President Snow. All in all, I thought this was a really good book and the narrator was great.

Spoilers - As King Jamison said to Hollis that she would come back to him, I am thinking that he had King Quentin send the Dark Knights to the house, but with instructions that Hollis not be harmed.
Which is why Scarlett was spared, because the Knights didn't exactly know Hollis and Scarlet was the only young lady present. I think Jamison believes Hollis will come running back to him.

loved it

The performance on this book was very well done. I enjoy her voice and how she changes for each of the characters. I liked how consistent she was with the story and the pacing.

This book was enjoyable. I like reading Kiera Cass's world. It is a young adult book and it is well written. I like that it is clean, no language, no sex, etc. I like that it kept me engaged. I will read book 2.
