Publisher's summary

Take a pilgrimage through some of the most challenging—and rewarding—parts of the Old Testament with bestselling author Philip Yancey.

Because it is often daunting, many Christians approach Old Testament carefully. Or avoid it altogether. But each of the books of the Old Testament—"the Bible Jesus read"—contains an essential part of the story of grace.

"The more we comprehend the Old Testament," Yancey writes, "the more we comprehend Jesus."

In The Bible Jesus Read, Yancey challenges the perception that the New Testament is more important than the Old. Writing with keen insight into the human condition and God’s provision for it, he sets off on a personal journey through the parts we most like to keep at arm’s length—Job, Deuteronomy, Psalms, Ecclesiastes, and the Prophets—and he asks us to bring our own questions, concerns, and our openness to the wonders of God.

We may discover that this set of writings that comprise the Old Testament is at once as mystifying and strangely satisfying as life itself—that it’s worth the effort it takes to listen to and wrestle with. Because listening to the Scriptures that Jesus so revered gives us a profound new understanding of Christ, the Cornerstone of the new covenant.

The Bible is the best book

I enjoyed this book. Philip Yancey opens up scripture in a unique way to help the listener understand it in a simpler way. This is a short book but packed full of hours of wisdom and insight.

Superb overview of the Old Testament

Something about this book keeps me returning to it time and again when I want to fill a spare half hour or so. That's certainly rare for an audio book, but it has a permanent place on my MP3 player. I particularly like Yancey as the narrator; though he's not super-polished, he provides a very comfortable and engaging narration. He is just a superb author and this book gave me a much deeper understanding of the Old Testament. I would love to see Audible carry the unabridged version.

Loved this book -- made me thirsty for some OT

Yeah, the old testament is hard sometimes. But, getting a little background sure helps. Finding out that what I was taught in Sunday School at 10 about the old testament is not enough for a 40+ modern mind should not have been a surprise. God really wants to have personal relationship with people -- that's what the author of this book wants to say, and I'm convinced that the authors of the old testament would agree.

Wonderful interpretation of Old Testament books

It is challenging reading the Old Testament but I know it is important to read in order to understand the New Testament. The overview in this book was definitely enlightening. Philip Yancey's voice was clear and very comforting. I thoroughly enjoyed The Bible Jesus Read.

The title is misleading?

This is like cliff notes for the old testament. If you want a quick summary of parts of the old testament then this is OK. He talks alot about the complaining of the Jews and sounds sarcastic when read alot of the scriptures. It does not give you any thoughts on what Jesus got out of the old testament and why he preached the way he did.
