Publisher's summary

An absolutely gripping mystery thriller

I set the small black box on the kitchen table. There are dozens of tapes. My finger hovers a beat and I push play. I hear Doctor Albright’s soft, kind voice encourage me to begin. “Tell me what you did that day.”

Detective Megan Carpenter is no stranger to evil. Escaping the horrors of her old life, she’s vowed never to let anyone hurt her or those she loves ever again. Joining the small police force in Jefferson County’s Port Townsend, Megan is determined to get every victim of a crime the justice they deserve.

So when Ruth Turner walks into the Sheriff’s office claiming her sister Ida Watson has been missing for over a month, Megan’s instincts tell her that she needs to do more than just file a report.

Arriving at a secluded farmhouse in the hills above Snow Creek, she finds Ida’s teenage children alone and frightened.

Then a few days later, close to the Watsons’ home, the blackened body of a woman is discovered in an abandoned pickup truck.

Megan must unravel the disturbing secrets of the isolated Snow Creek community if she is to catch the killer.

But Megan has dark secrets of her own too....

Hidden in the back of her closet is a box of tapes containing every single recording of her therapy sessions with Doctor Albright over 13 years ago. As Megan begins to play the tapes, she’s taken straight back to her terrifying childhood, back to the time she was a kid called Rylee, fighting to survive.

Can Megan finally confront the past she’s spent years trying to block out and will listening to her own painful story help her solve the complex case she is now entangled in?

From the number-one New York Times and Amazon Charts best-selling author comes an absolutely heart-stopping crime series introducing Detective Megan Carpenter.

Easy and Entertaining Murder Mystery

The introduction to Detective Megan Carpenter was great and I look forward to the next series. However, I can't go on with the same narrator. I almost stopped listening to this book but forced myself to "get my money's worth" and plug through. The narrator should not overpower the narrative unless in a good way. If you need a murder mystery fix this is a complex and interesting book.

Wow....just wow!

Welp, I guess I have to get the rest of the series now. This book gripped me and I'm still reeling from that ending!!

Good book, bad narration

I haven't even finished the book, but I wanted to see if the narrator's voice bothered anyone but me. Its confirmed. She's annoying. Her voice and sing-songy way of speaking is taking away from the story. I love Gregg Olsen's books and haven't had a problem with other narration.

worst narrator ever, but very intriguing story

I listened to this book between 1.75x 2.0x because Patricia Rodriguez made my ears bleed. her narration was the worst narration I have ever heard. she was so slow and sound higher than a kite. if I didn't have to read this for a book club I would never have downloaded it. I wish I could give her negative stars. will never purchase another book narrated by her again.

the story, on the other hand, was very intriguing. twists and turns all over the place. it kept me on my toes and kept me guessing. not a bad beginning to a detective series! I am curious to know what will happen to detective carpenter seeing as the book ended with a cliff hanger (not a huge fan as I wasn't planning to read the second book), but if the same narrator is reading the second instalment, I will most definitely pass.

Great story, narration not so much

Gregg Olsen never disappoints, and this book is no exception. I purchased both the Kindle & audio. The breathy voice, cadence and the way the narrator draws out words is very difficult to listen to. I will not purchase another audio book with this narrator.

The Narrator is awful

The book had potential. But the narrator is so awful that I couldn't finish listening.

Good but not his best

Good story but I’ve read other books by this author that are better. I think one of the major reasons I liked this book less than some of his others is the reader. Not much excitement in her voice and sometimes a bit tired sounding. I will avoid books she narrates in the future.

I made it through about 40 chapters and just thought “enough.” I didn’t even care to finish it.

The narrators voice is irritating to listen to. The story did not keep me interested either. As a matter fact, after spending many days listening to this I questioned why I was even finishing it. To me, I do not recommend it at all.
