About this listen

The Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was an Anglican priest, antiquarian, folklorist, and novelist. He is remembered best as the composer of the hymns "Onward, Christian Soldiers" and "Now the Day Is Over". This work was the first academic study of lycanthropy in English, and draws upon a vast body of lore and myth.

Hooked on phonics?

I would have given this book a higher rating - the content is well researched and presented. My difficulty lies in the narration. While Mr. Romance has a nice voice, and a decent repertoire of generic accents to liven things with, his inability to pronounce words - even in his (I must assume) native language (American English) is appalling. Then, there are all the other languages quoted from in the text! Latin and German and Danish! Oh, my. I really wanted to like this narrator. I really did. Unfortunately, Mr. Romance mutilates language worse than the felons he is reading about mutilated bodies. If you’re a kid, and don’t care about these things, go boldly forward. If, however, you are older, and actually learned how to read properly in grade school, gird you’re loins. This is a rough listen.
