About this listen

An Amazon Charts bestseller

From New York Times bestselling author Alice Hoffman comes a heartfelt short story about family, independence, and finding your place in the world.

Isabel Gibson has all but perfected the art of forgetting. She’s a New Yorker now, with nothing left to tie her to Brinkley’s Island, Maine. Her parents are gone, the family bookstore is all but bankrupt, and her sister, Sophie, will probably never speak to her again.

But when a mysterious letter arrives in her mailbox, Isabel feels herself drawn to the past. After years of fighting for her independence, she dreads the thought of going back to the island. What she finds there may forever alter her path—and change everything she thought she knew about her family, her home, and herself.

Critic reviews

“Jennifer Jill Araya brings the two sisters in Hoffman's short story to life. She projects the hurtful emotional baggage they've been carrying throughout 12 years of estrangement.”AudioFile Magazine

Treacle

This is overblown , simplistic, predictable, and sicky sweet. Alice Hoffman is WAY better than this!

not worth 1 credit

Was waiting for some plot, Twist, philosophy, something but just a story about 2 sisters. Really sad I spent my monthly credit on this :(

Loved this story

What a wonderful story, I thought the characters were likeable and the story was bittersweet. Alice Hoffman did a fabulous job as always.

Delightful

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this short story but I knew Alice Hoffman is an excellent author so I looked forward to seeing where it would go. My only disappointment is I wanted more of these characters. I haven’t looked to see if a book is coming soon but if so I will gladly buy it. If however, this is the end of the tale, everything was still wrapped up. The narrator does an excellent job as well. All the stars!

cute short story

I read it as a pallet cleanser between two long series. Story was cute. Pretty melodramatic reading performance but not terrible. It worked for portraying the extreme emotions pretty well I suppose.

Excellent short story!

I liked the fact that it shows that we can return to what we left because love makes it possible. Love stands the test of time!
