Great Story

One of the best books I've listened to in quite a while. Not as adventurous as I hoped but entertaining non the less. If you are looking for a great read after this try Winter king or tea rose. I wish other reviewers would advertise a next read for me.

A good combination: history and romance

I especially enjoy Bertrice Small's romance novels because she weaves history into every story. It's the history that gives her work substance and makes a novel a worthwhile read. Ms. Small gets to the point. I prefer that approach rather than listen to obscure descriptions about personalities and locations.

Hail to our departed queen

One of the romance authors I read back in the day was Bertrice Small. Her Skye O'Malley was full of history, swashbuckle and passionate couplings. I was hooked. I grew up. My tastes changed and I haven't read one of hers for years. The Border Vixen was a good one to read in memoriam. It lacked the complicated plot and the sequential great lovers for the heroine I remember from her earlier work but in language and history it had her unmistakeable touch. And sometimes a reader needs a more generous serving of Tell Me because Show Me simply takes too long.

One of her best

I’ve only recently discovered this author. Her Border Series has been phenomenal. This story is by far the most interesting and well written of all her books that I’ve listened to so far. I’m sure it will be a favorite. This narrator should have read all of the books in my opinion. Justine Eyre is okay, but her voice is high and breathy. This narrator has a perfect voice for stories revolving around Scotland. She did a great job.

Very good

I enjoyed this one. As a matter of fact, I've read two others by Bertrice Small and enjoyed them all.

Good book

This was a very well written book by Bertrice and the narrator did a fabulous job with the characters. My only fault was that the book itself was exceptionally long and the story seemed to have dragged out too long! It would be nice to have a follow on to this book to see if the first born from both sides actually got together or not. A good listen though!!

Hard to get past narrator

Ugh. All the dialogue is so stiff. She sounds like each character is making a grand statement, regardless of what they are saying or the situation. Narrator also sounds like an old smoker, not a young woman. Very unbelievable. I finally couldn’t take it anymore about a third of the way in. I’ll try it as a real book since I know I love Ms. Small’s other works.
