About this listen

A renowned psychiatrist reveals how trauma affects children—and outlines the path to recovery.

"Fascinating and upbeat.... Dr. Perry is both a world-class creative scientist and a compassionate therapist." (Mary Pipher, PhD, author of Reviving Ophelia)

How does trauma affect a child's mind—and how can that mind recover? In the classic The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog, Dr. Perry explains what happens to the brains of children exposed to extreme stress and shares their lessons of courage, humanity, and hope. Only when we understand the science of the mind and the power of love and nurturing can we hope to heal the spirit of even the most wounded child.

Fascinating and eye-opening

The stories of trauma and it’s impact on the human brain are both fascinating and heartbreaking. A few chapters were difficult to get through as a result of own my experience with abuse.

This is a great read for both survivors and anyone who wants to better understand those who have.

Depth of Corrective needs

Dr. Peery's information was enlightening and encouraging. Helped me realize the depth of the human brain is immeasurable. Thank you for helping me see that there is more to the "action", than the behavior itself. Thank you!!

I read many eduction, psychology, and leadership books. This is one of the best books I have ever listened to about education and psychology, including trauma. It will even help in the leadership realm. Thank you for all the work that went into this book!

Absolutely amazing. This book was perfect.

This book was amazing. From beginning to end I was pulled to listen to just one more page. I dont know if it was because I related to what I was reading on a different level or the fact that I was learning about the crucial years during child development that every parent should be aware of. I would recommend to anyone who has experienced trauma as a child as a blueprint to recovery as well as to all parents to educate and prevent childhood trauma and undue stress if possible in the future.

So informative

I am a adoptive parent through The Office of Childrens Services I did foster care for a few years and I wish I had this information before I started foster care I feel I could have been a much greater asset to the children in my home if I had this resource!!! The two children I adopted were severely neglected physically emotionally and sexually abused and I think this book is going to be a huge help in the way I help them!!!

Exceptional

I was intrigued by the title and the content did not disappoint. It's helpful if you are already knowledgeable on some Psychology basics or have recently taken an Intro to Psychology course. It elaborates on so many basics and really gives insight in how important the basics can be when making huge waves in this subject. Great overall read.
