Publisher's summary

A longtime trauma worker, Laura van Dernoot Lipsky offers a deep and empathetic survey of the often-unrecognized toll on those working to make the world a better place. We may feel tired, cynical, numb, or like we can never do enough. These, and other symptoms, affect us individually and collectively, sapping the energy and effectiveness we so desperately need if we are to benefit humankind, other animals, and the planet itself. Through Trauma Stewardship, we are called to meet these challenges in an intentional way - not by becoming overwhelmed but by developing a quality of mindful presence. Joining the wisdom of ancient cultural traditions with modern psychological research, Lipsky offers a variety of simple and profound practices that will allow us to remake ourselves - and ultimately the world.

Good book, horrendous narration

I was super excited that this came in audiobook format, so I could listen to this in my car, but once it began I realized something was terribly wrong. The narrator seems unfamiliar and unenthusiastic about the subject and verged on bored. They really did not do this book justice. Perhaps this was the narrators first time reading for an audiobook? I would highly recommend that this author finds better narration for their book to do their book the justice it needs.

Eye opening and healing

I started this book to get me ready to do fostering.
Little I knew how much I was going to learn about myself, about my motivation and about how to heal within to give true, sustainable support to others.
Highly recommend to everyone. You don't need to work on the medical field or be a social worker to benefit from it. As a mom, daughter, co-worker, friend, community members you are exposed to secondary trauma on a daily basis and this is an excellent book to increase our resilience

Excellent book!

Loved listening and following along with the book. Her adding the newspaper cartoons was refreshing and gave me something to look forward to during the read.

A bit dated, but great overall

I wish they had professional narrators and storytellers; the choppy reading was distracting and I could hear some of the other contributors turning pages in the background as they were reading.
I didn’t realize how old this book was until the author kept talking about critical incident stress debriefing, which is an outdated method of handling trauma after traumatic events and can be harmful in a lot of situations. But a good amount of the information in this book, especially the second half, is timeless and useful.

great for people in ANY care profession

I was suggested this book because I was a marriage family therapist trainee. I wish I had heard/read this book before I started my traineeship. It helped me realize that I was being traumatized by helping those who had experienced trauma - it was so bad that I was headed for burn out before my career even started. This flipped my view and helped me help myself, to seek help, and cope with not being able to be the wonder woman everyone else thought I was and that I was pushing to be. I may still be wonder woman some day, but even then, I'll be the human version with faults, needs, and limits. This book helped me understand that and I've suggested it to others in helping fields including: people working in ERs, those working along side medical staff, nurses, firefighters, volunteers, therapists, clients, and will continue to suggest to people in other fields in the future.

Great book for anyone in the field

This book was solid! Lots of nuggets of wisdom throughout. This is NOT some lofty book, and part of the content will challenge your own ego and sense of self (which, at times, is the medicine we need). Disregard comments about the narration, I thought the author did just fine.
