Publisher's summary

Knowing that she alone can protect her sister from the Baron Harwood, their lecherous stepfather, Victoria Temple Whiting snatches the family's heirloom necklace - believed to hold the power to bring great happiness or terrible tragedy - to pay for their escape to London. Terrified that the baron will find them, Victoria poses as Tory Temple and finds employment as a servant in the household of handsome Cordell Easton, the scandalous Earl of Brant.

The sisters' arrival couldn't have been more welcome. In need of a new mistress, Cord turns to Tory, whose wit and intellect intrigue him. But when the baron discovers the girls' whereabouts, Cord learns Tory's secret - her noble birth. Furious that he has compromised the daughter of a peer, Cord must decide if he will marry Tory to keep her safe or allow his stubborn pride to deny his heart.

Critic reviews

"Martin adroitly balances the passion and intrigue in this fast-paced Regency, and provides vibrant characters, a swashbuckling prison escape and a satisfying resolution of the necklace legend." ( Publishers Weekly)

Great read

I really enjoyed listening to this book by Kat Martin. I honestly thought I had read it, but it seems I did not. I am going to listen to the next book in this series. I really love Kat Martin.

Agree on other reviews

The narrator wasn’t the best. I read the whole series years ago and loved it; now… it doesn’t hold up as well. It was like a B movie that you couldn’t help watching even though you were rolling your eyes a lot and calling out the main characters.

Well done

I totally enjoyed this book. Romance and slow burn. With just enough angst. I love how well written this was.

Distracting performance

I know the British pronounce certain words differently, but this woman is horrible. For marquis she says marQUIS; for auburn she says oh burn. Several made up words, too, like “inscrusible.” The story redeems the narration by having unexpected turns, but several things were predictable, like the pregnancy.

Good story, challenging to listen to

Good story, poor narration. Skipped to the end due to narration….very bland and monotone

GREAT READ

Great story. just wish authors would not string it along so long. Stop making the charictors pretend for an abnormal amount of time they aren't in love. put a little reality in the story..

Got fed up

The story had some interesting elements to start out, but when the characters started making immature and preposterous choices I got so put off that I don’t want to finish reading
