About this listen

The exciting end to The Poppy War trilogy, R. F. Kuang’s acclaimed, award-winning epic fantasy that combines the history of twentieth-century China with a gripping world of gods and monsters, to devastating, enthralling effect.

After saving her nation of Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress Su Daji in a brutal civil war, Fang Runin was betrayed by allies and left for dead.

Despite her losses, Rin hasn’t given up on those for whom she has sacrificed so much—the people of the southern provinces and especially Tikany, the village that is her home. Returning to her roots, Rin meets difficult challenges—and unexpected opportunities. While her new allies in the Southern Coalition leadership are sly and untrustworthy, Rin quickly realizes that the real power in Nikan lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation.

Backed by the masses and her Southern Army, Rin will use every weapon to defeat the Dragon Republic, the colonizing Hesperians, and all who threaten the shamanic arts and their practitioners. As her power and influence grows, though, will she be strong enough to resist the Phoenix’s intoxicating voice urging her to burn the world and everything in it?

Not my favorite

I don't think I've ever wanted a main character to die so much. I appreciated the theater, the magic system, but I hated the main character.

Incredible

This entire series is comprised of some of the best books and audiobooks I’ve ever experienced. Kuang is a master and I can’t wait to see what she does next.

Great ending to a great series

This was a really good read on its own merit and it lives up to the strength of the rest of the series. I won't give anything away, but WOW, what an ending. The Poppy War is one of the best series I've read in a long time.

Great End To A Great Trilogy

I've been a huge fan of the Poppy War books since I discovered them earlier this year.

While the books stand on their own, anyone with an interest in modern Chinese history will particularly enjoy them.

Kuang creates deeply human characters whose lives explore the horrors of China's Century of Humiliation in the fictional empire of Nikan.

I highly, highly recommend this boom and the entire series.

Enjoy!

I didn't expect that ending

I truly enjoyed this series. I listened to the 1st 2 books and I guess I had pre-ordered the last book and it popped up in my library! I felt like I was meeting up with old friends. Months had passed since I read the 1st 2 books but all of the characters as mentioned were easily remembered due to the authors ability to convey their personalities and visages so well. I didn't expect such a sad ending. I guess I hoped for what Runin and Kitai hoped for but alas, it wasn't meant to be.

Great frustration felt

The performance was amazing and I could feel the frustration of all the characters throughout the books. It was really good!

You’re in for a ride!

Holy cr#p I did not see that coming. I usually listen to fantasy stories with some levity, so this is much darker than my normal preference. That said, I’m glad I stuck with it. Such an different pace, voice, and narrative than I’m used to, and that’s pretty cool.

I’m mad at the ending

This book probably deserves every bit of 5 stars. But I read for fantasy, because real life doesn’t have a happy ending, but we can at least read one in a book. And I knew that it had to end a certain way, I knew. Buy I needed some hope. This ending feels like despair.

Pretty epic

Kind of an emotional roller coaster and I liked it. And the narrator is great.
