About this listen

Long-listed, Barnes and Noble Best New Books of the Year 2023

"This captivating production will leave listeners wanting more."—AudioFile

When two young rival journalists find love through a magical connection, they must face the depths of hell, in a war among gods, to seal their fate forever.

After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addiction and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

To combat her worries, Iris writes letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe door, where they vanish—into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. When he anonymously writes Iris back, the two of them forge a connection that will follow Iris all the way to the front lines of battle: for her brother, the fate of mankind, and love.

Shadow and Bone meets Lore in Rebecca Ross's Divine Rivals, an epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel filled with hope and heartbreak, and the unparalleled power of love.

Critic reviews

"An ardent romance and a harrowing exploration of war’s horrors and heartbreaks... with inventive worldbuilding, nuanced characterizations, and prose by turns dreamy and atmospherically tense."—Publishers Weekly

“Rich and romantic—if stories had scent, this one would smell like a mug of black tea, the ink ribbons of a typewriter, and that addictive spice called enemies to lovers.”—Shelby Mahurin, New York Times bestselling author of Serpent & Dove

"A sweeping start to a beautiful and romantic new series. Ross weaves her stories in such a vulnerable and delicate way, truly with a style all her own. I adored this book."—Adalyn Grace, New York Times bestselling author of Belladonna

Good love story

I really enjoyed how much romance was in this story. Rebecca Ross did a great job at helping the readers/listeners find connection between Iris and Roman. It was such a sweet and sometimes maddening journey. I assume the next book with focus much more on the world around them and dig deeper into things beyond the two writers. Though I enjoyed this, it felt a little flat at times. Overall, I would recommend this book to others.

Read based on A River Enchanted

I loved a River Enchanted/A Fire Endless, so I wanted to give the author’s new book a try! At the beginning, I felt it to be slow, but it was definitely necessary to set up the rest of the story. It is very different from her other books I had read. It takes the darkness of a World War I/II style romance and adds a slight fantasy twist. I definitely enjoyed this book and was excited to listen every day.

Very warm and wholesome

Took me a couple of chapters to get used to the narration, but after that it was perfect!! I never wanted the story to end. Looking forward to the next book

Entertaining

I really enjoyed this story. The little bits of magic and romance, with a spin on WWII, it was a fun one.

“Do you see me?”

First off, I love a good accent so I was pleasantly surprised when I began listening to this book.

Now onto the story; I am 100% obsessed. I loved all the similarities we got to see between the characters that they didn’t get to see themselves. I loved their banter sososo much; give me a witty, sarcastic FMC every day of the week please & thanks

The world building!!!!! The background details we got within Iris and Roman’s letters were so vital to the story for me.

I’m really not sure what I’m going to do with myself until December when the next book comes out. Every time I think of the plot twist ending I legitimately want to sob so, I’ll just be here crying apparently 😭🤣
