About this listen

Dean Mathews leads a normal, if boring life. His career, his home, his social life, none of it is really what he wanted for himself, but it's the life he has nonetheless. A small coincidence brings him the opportunity to take ownership of his grandfather's old farm, to bring the place under his wing and careful hand. This choice will lead him from his old life to face a host of new challenges, most of which he expected. The unforeseen comes in the form of Mikael Reed, a simple carpenter - with a few secrets. The friendship that forms between them becomes more, and eventually Mikael's secrets, and the echoes of family legends come to bear, altering Dean's once stale life, forever.

In this paranormal gay romance novel, you will be intrigued by the mysteries behind families, the secrets they keep, and what happens behind closed doors. Sometimes it's hot and sometimes it's sinister - what more can you ask for? Dean gets to do a little digging and shed some light on the things that kept his family up and go bump in the night.

Enjoyable story.

This is an enjoyable read. I like Dean and Mikael's story. I like see how their relationship grows. Now Nic Lazer did an okay job with this one. I would like to hear more of a difference in the voices but I still like listening to it.

Pretty good

First i would like to say the overall story.. I liked it. It was a nice story. A slow burn. But the narration.....So the narratation seemed extremely artificial and robotic. I got used to it towards the end but it was distracting at first. There were also typos in this story where Mikel's name was switched the Michael quite often. That was slightly annoying. But i did enjoy the story and Im willing to give book 2 a chance. It will just take some getting used to

The Carpenter's Secret

3 Stars All Around

This book was a Wolf shifter (Mikael) and Human (Dean) pairing set in a paranormal universe that ends in a HFN which will continue following the same characters storyline into the next books.

I thought the writing was okay. There was a lot of dialogue and background on Dean compared to the actual storyline happening around these guys. I am hoping that in book two we get some more intense plot since we learned so much about these characters in this first book. I need a lot more action and drama and a little less talking and details. However, the things that we learned about Dean's grandpa and the surrounding towns were pretty interesting and I wouldn't mind hearing just a little bit more about it in the next book. This book kind of felt like it was more of an introduction that could have been reduced by a few pages, since it was a slower build up to the full story I am assuming we will get in the next book.

Audio - I think the narrator Nic Lazar did ok. Not great, but just ok. There were a few words that stood out to me during the story as mispronounced and a few times he ran on a little more monotone without enough emotion when times called for that. But overall for a newer narrator starting out he really didn't do bad. I would still be interested to see how he improves as a narrator as time goes on.

A Must read

After reading and rereading this book, I can't get enough of the story of Dean and Mikael .
The whole series is a must read.
This book and the author stated my journey in the world of Shifters and M/M books.

From the first Time Mikael showed up at his Farm Dean knew there was something different about Mikael. as their everyday tat-a-tat continued Dean knew he felt something more than just friendship toward Mikael.

This series is full of interesting twists and turns, A must Read.

secrets

This is a sweet love story that captured me. After Dean inherited his grandfather's house he came upon a few secrets that changed his life forever. I enjoyed watching the relationship grow between Dean and Mikael as they worked on the house. I liked how Mikael comes to the
rescue. Scary but romantic. Sweet ending. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job.

Slow moving, but interesting

The narration here really ruins what could have been a much better listen. The story isn't terribly original, but the characters are pleasant and the set up....a man going back to revive the family farm...are a nice hook into the tale.

But the narration is so utterly flat, with almost no inflection or sense of character, it destroys the book. There are far too many mispronounced words (tactile is TACK-tile, not tass-ILE, for example), and is it Michael or Mikale? The story makes it clear that the carpenter's name is pronounced Mikale, but the narrator keeps switching back and forth.

This is an audio book, narration is crucial to making or breaking the story. When are authors and producers going to start actually listening to these things? It seems like part of the job to me, but maybe I'm in the minority here. A middle of the road book like this can be elevated dramatically by good narration, imo. It's time for the powers that be to start finding and grooming stronger talent.

The story is enjoyable, but not terribly dramatic or emotional. However, if you like MM paranormal romance, it's not a bad entry into the genre.

A wonderful start to a new series.

Dean had his future as a farmer all picked until life got in the way when he first lost his parents then his grandfather. For years he worked at a job he really didn't like until the day he finally opened the letter form his grandfather. He was supposed to wait until the time he needed change, but he never expected that his grandfather left him a chance to return to his roots by leaving the farm to him. That moment was a turning point leading him back home where the town accepted him with open arms, but what he didn't expect came in the form of Mikael Reed, a carpenter. The attraction was mutual, but for some unknown reason Mikael seemed hesitant to become more than casual friends. Add to that an almost human acting wolf who seemed to come to visit Dean when he was alone and the neighbor's mistrust of anyone from The Grove, an area nearby that kept to themselves, things were never dull.

The narrator brought the characters alive as the story unfolded.
