About this listen

It is July 2003. In the middle of its maiden voyage, the luxury cruise ship Emerald Dolphin suddenly catches fire and sinks. What caused it? Why didn't the alarms go off? What was its connection to the revolutionary new engines powering the ship?

NUMA special projects director Dirk Pitt races to rescue the passengers and investigate the disaster, but he has no idea of the bizarre events that are about to engulf him. Before the next few weeks are over, Pitt will find himself confronted by an extraordinary series of monsters, both human and mechanical, modern and ancient. He will tread upon territory previously known only to legend. And, at the end of it all, though many lives will be lost, and many saved, it is Pitt's own life that will be changed forever....

Filled with dazzling suspense and breathtaking action, Valhalla Rising is Cussler at the height of his storytelling powers.

Disappointed

I do not like this abridged version. There is so much information missing in it. I was very disappointed. I didn’t like the narrator. He did not do justice to the characters.

Great book

Jumped around just a bit but easy to keep up with. Liked the voices the reader used and the tie to other books.

Missing a bit of the Cussler magic

The voice acting was solid but this abridgement leaves out some question solving scenes. As a wholethe excellent narration by Ron McLarty captures most of the story but there are several scenes from the book that are shortend or straight up ommitted completely. Even for a person who owns the book and rereads it regularly, the cuts leave questions with the listener that could have been avoided. Still its a good listen and I would endorse sharing this with anyone who likes the genre.

It's never too late to discover Clive Cussler.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It took me 70 years to discover Clive Cussler's writings and I'm glad I started with this one. No dull moments. Ron McLarty's voice drew me into the story and I was totally captured. If you haven't already explored "Valhalla Rising," do it!

What did you like best about this story?

There will be no spoiler alerts coming from me, This story needs to be experienced first-hand.

Have you listened to any of Ron McLarty’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I'm new to audio books. But I sample before I buy, and if the voice doesn't please my ear I leave it alone. Mr. McLarty's storytelling is so far the best that I've "read." He keeps the tale alive even when discussing technical subjects. He makes one feel like part of the crew, IN the story rather than outside looking in.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Again, no spoilers from me. Sorry.

Any additional comments?

Be prepared to get hooked on Cussler.

Another great Clive Cussler adventure with Dirk Pitt

I have not read a book that I didn’t like from Clive Cussler. There is always adventure, a mix of history and just awesome characters.

I didn’t realize this was an abridged version.

I do NOT like abridged versions, and this one was badly done. It took me several listens to realize it wasn’t a download issue, or my mind wandering, before I saw the word ‘abridged’. I like the overall premise, but feel like more than half is missing. Audible needs to provide both versions!

Detailed location descriptions

Enjoyed the escapist adventure but thought the plot lost its way a time or two and lessened the storyline.

didn't really like the narrator. hard to get behind a different voice when you've listened to another guy read all of the other Oregon file books . only complaint . still great story.
