About this listen

The most virulent weapon of mass destruction will be unleashed upon the world, but Delta Force veteran Daniel Strong isn't about to let that happen. Recalled from the depths of drug addiction and depression, Danny is the last chance for the CIA to stop an auction in New York where powerful weapons dealers are to bid for the right to proliferate a deadly neurotoxin. The road to finding the auction's location leads directly to the weapon's creator: a devil in Tory Burch flats and heroin addict who has committed the chemical compound to memory. Yet Danny isn't the only one chasing her. He must protect her from a sadistic Palestinian terrorist known only as Sabir, who wants to use the weapon to destroy Israel and will do anything - including torture - to get it. Danny must walk a fine line to control his obsession to resolve a dark secret from his past and his feelings for the chemist that could compromise the operation's objective - before it's too late.

A solid thriller

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Overall, a decent and entertaining experience. The narrator was fantastic. I hadn't heard anything from Eric G Dove before but I'll keep him in mind going forward. He did a great job of making characters come alive. My only beef with the story was that two of the main characters are drug addicts. I thought this took up too much of the story line. I see how this could give Danny empathy for Tory, but I found the talk of addiction a bit distracting. That being said, I still enjoyed the story and the plot did have a couple of turns I didn't completely expect. It's definitely worth a listen if you like these types of thrillers.

Good start to a series

Any additional comments?

3.5 stars
Talk about a twisted web of deceit. This was a pleasant surprise and a good start to a series. It was an entertaining, engaging and interesting story with plenty of mystery, intrigue, action and suspense. There's also a bit of romance woven into the mix. ( As you can tell from the cover). It's definitely not predictable either, it goes from one twist to another. It keeps you on your toes trying to figure out what is going to happen next.

It took me a couple of chapters to be completely pulled into the story but once I was it kept my attention until the end. There were a couple of times the writing could have been a bit more polished. On several occasions the same thing is being said in a slightly different way or the same information repeated within a couple of lines. It happened enough for me to notice it but not enough to effect my overall enjoyment of the story.

The story is told through several different POV's and has a good cast of interesting characters. Both likable and many unlikable. Actually most of the characters are more unlikable but they great.

A chemist that has an addiction to drugs is a dangerous thing. I'm surprised Kate didn't go insane from everything that was going on. Talk about head games, manipulation and deception. There is enough going on in this story to make a sane person go insane. Even though there is a reason for the route they (CIA) take to get the information they are after, it is an evil unto itself.

Eric G. Dove does a great job with the narration. I haven't listened to a book he has narrated in a while. Seeing that he was the narrator is part of what drew me to the story. Side note - I had never realized before that he was a signer. Nice voice weather signing or narrating that is easy to listen to for long periods of time. He was the perfect choice of narrators for this story. His narration is clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Good character voices. He is able to bring the characters and story to life through his narration. Hopefully he will be narrating the rest of the series. Very enjoyable.

Thriller

From the very beginning of the book I was drawn into the seedy world of terrorism in the Middle East, then to New York where we learn more about Danny’s background and how his life is again about to take a drastic turn., Extreme, flawed, brilliant, and dangerous characters are portrayed throughout . The book wasn’t predictable and the author is very knowledgeable about science and military technology. Great thriller.

Not bad

A pretty good listen. Mr. Dove is a great narrator who I enjoy immensely however there were times that it seemed he was talking a bit too fast which made it a bit hard to follow along. Otherwise a pretty good book

Kept me guessing...

If you could sum up The Chemist in three words, what would they be?

Many unexpected turns...

What did you like best about this story?

This story kept me guessing from the beginning, which doesn't happen often. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I would be wrong.

Which scene was your favorite?

If I tell, it will be a spoiler. There were many scenes that were great.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Yes, but again, if I tell, it will be a spoiler. Let's just say that a scene regarding the heroine, Katelyn, shook me up quite a bit. This is something for someone who reads mystery novels non-stop.

Any additional comments?

It took me a while to get invested into this story. The first few chapters seemed to be full of clichés, but once I got through the initial bits, it came together very nicely. I enjoyed the bits of law thrown in there also.

This story doesn't sugar coat anything which adds to its appeal. There may or may not be a happy ending and the main characters are flawed, yet redemption isn't beyond reach.

There were some moments where the editing could have been smoother, but overall, I truly enjoyed the book.

Intriguing Mystery

Enjoyable listen. I wish I would have listed to it more quickly as I had a hard time following along. I suggest this audible for a long car ride.

Hooked me early

This has a great storyline. It kept me guessing and I definitely didn't expect the ending. I will say that I wish the narrator hadn't mispronounced some of the chemical terms but overall it was a good performance.

Fast paced government thriller

Stories of redemption and heroism are always satisfying, and author Alan Field one doesn't disappoint with this thrill ride. The hero, Daniel (Danny) has serious problems of his own, yet he is the one who is perfectly suited to solve some serious problems for the CIA in its time of need.

Narrator Eric C. Dove does a killer job with the voices and especially the accents since there are some middle easterners and some tricky Islamic names that would have made me tongue ties. Eric also does an amazing job with women's voices, which a lot of male narrators don't manage well at all.

If you are in the mood for a fast-paced story that doesn't have so many moving parts that you'll get confused, but just enough that you get plenty of suspense and won't want your commute to end, pick this one up and give it a chance. Although I got a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, I plan to get the future books in this series for sure. Give this first novel a try and you won't be disappointed.

Better than a good listen.

Story line is not too simple and not too complicated. Characters are interesting. Action scenes are well described. Hero is complicated. Narrator is easy to listen to with a good voice. I recommend this book.
