About this listen

“In Hunt Them Down, Gervais has crafted an intelligent and thoughtful thriller that mixes family dynamics with explosive action... The possibilities are endless in this new series, and this will easily find an enthusiastic audience craving Hunt’s next adventures.” - Associated Press

The dark world he’s been fighting against has caught up with him. Will his daughter pay the price?

Former Army Ranger Pierce Hunt is no stranger to violence. Fresh off a six-month suspension, he’s itching to hit a notorious Mexican drug cartel where it hurts, even if that means protecting crime boss Vicente Garcia, a witness in the case against sadistic cartel leader Valentina Mieles. But things spiral out of control when the cartel murders Garcia and kidnaps his granddaughter and an innocent bystander, Hunt’s own teenage daughter.

Mieles wants the new head of the Garcia family on a plate - literally. Hunt has seventy-two hours to deliver, or Mieles will execute the girls live on social media. With the clock ticking, Hunt goes off the grid and teams up with Garcia’s daughter, a former lover and current enemy. To save the girls, Hunt will have to become a man he swore he’d never be again: an avenging killer without limits or mercy.

Don't mess with Pierce Hunt's family!

What a series debut! Im new to Simon Gervais. This was my first read from him and i wasnt disappointed. Mitch Rapp, Dewey Andreas, Court Gentry and Victor the Assassin. Those are my favorite characters in the Military/Assassin action thriller genre! It's still early, but I can easily see Pierce Hunt joining those ranks. He's different from them though. While the other guys are all assassins or CIA black ops guys, Hunt is a DEA agent. An ex Army Ranger whose daughter gets kidnapped by one of the most feared drug cartel leaders in the world...wrong move! Nothing motivates a father more than his little girl being in danger and Hunt, even as a DEA and law enforcement officer will do absolutely anything and kill anyone to save his girl!
Mr. Gervais does an excellent job showing you who Hunt is; his strengths, weaknesses, his past mistakes, passions and love for his daughter. He shows that Hunt is a human being and like everyone, he has skeletons in his closet. As an Army 11B OIFIII combat veteran and father of 2 beautiful little girls, i can relate to Hunt and his motivation in so many ways it's unreal. As expected, since Mr. Gervais was an Infantry officer and federal agent, he does an amazing job with his descriptions of weapons and intense combat situations. Just one brief example; I get very angry when i read a military thriller and the author uses the word clips instead of magazine. Its sloppy writing and sloppy research in my opinion. Well, none of that in here. Mr. Gervais knows his stuff! The combat and tactical situations are top notch! This novel has the feel of Taken mixed with Don Winslow's Power of the Dog series, yet, Mr. Gervais at the same time makes it his own and unique. What could have been a stale and overused plot and premise was used in a fresh and exciting way. Also, i cant remember an action thriller hitting me so hard emotionally as this one. The brutality and true evil of the world and some human beings is shown in very good detail.
All in all, an outstanding debut of a new action hero that we can relate to. A violent, truthful, accurate novel that will make you want to kick ass but at other times tear up. Happiness to sadness...the emotions are all engaged in this thriller! The next Hunt will be this year and I can't wait!

Great new thriller

What a fantastic new novel involving the DEA, cartels, betrayal, and everything in between. I will definitely be reading all future books by this guy.

Wow! Amazing Book

I did not expect to be "wowed" by this book. But I was. Author Simon Gervais is no novice in the field of law enforcement. Born in Montreal, he first received extensive training in the Canadian military, serving as an Infantry officer and later as a drug investigator, working closely with American colleagues from the DEA. His career was refocused in 2004 when he joined the Canadian federal anti-terrorism unit based in the Ottawa Region. His assignments included guarding foreign heads of state when they visited Canada. He also was involved in counter-intelligence. So he knows of what he writes, and the realism shows.

In “Hunt Them Down,” Gervais unveils a new protagonist, former Army Ranger Pierce Hunt, who operates undercover for the DEA. The crime extravaganza features big-time firepower with an array of sinister weapons, relentless bloodletting with bodies strewn around the world, and massive crime syndicates battling for control of vast fortunes. Valentina Mieles, the dreaded Black Tosca, perhaps the most powerful woman in the drug world, is intent on expanding her empire and moving in on Vincente Garcia’s crime syndicate.

A plan to murder the elder Garcia as he is being transferred from one prison to another becomes a bloodbath where many of Tosca’s violent followers are killed, as are numerous law enforcement personnel, as well as Garcia. Tosca, not satisfied with the slaughter she perpetrated, continues her assault and kidnaps Garcia’s granddaughter, Sophia, who she plans to set on fire in public view, as notice of her ascension to greater power. Unfortunately, Hunt’s own daughter, a friend of Sophia’s, is also snatched, putting new urgency in the search for both girls.

Hunt is relentless, even resorting to torture, to get information that will assist him in his mad rush to rescue the girls and put Tosca away for good. He will stop at nothing to find his daughter. Many aspects of modern warfare are employed in the chase, including drones, airplanes, and boats as the story comes to a violent conclusion in Mexico.

It is a good book, authentic and fast paced, with strong characters and well-developed dialogue. The author has the chops to provide a strong background for his story and the results are clear and authoritative. I strongly recommend this book as a fascinating listen.

Bon Shaw was outstanding with the delivery of the story

I like the overall experience of this book, but

I am always dismayed about "the lone wolf that is bigger and badder than everyone else". But you know you have me when I am "backseat driving your story"....don't do that, do this. Hoping this series matures into something great.

Pretty good

While the writing is basic, the story is entertaining and fast paced. I struggled with the narrator though. He was okay for The Martian, but his voice kept taking me out of this story. Might continue the story in book form.
