About this listen

The most chilling read of the Christmas season.

As the snow begins to fall, the body count begins to climb…

DI James Walker is ready for a quiet family Christmas in the sleepy village of Kirkby Abbey.

But when he opens an early Christmas present left on his doorstep, he soon realises it is no gift. Inside is a gruesome surprise, and a promise – twelve days, twelve murders. Not long after, the first body is found, half frozen in the snow.

As the blizzards descend, panic spreads through the remote Cumbrian village – there’s a killer amongst them, and with eleven more victims to go, anyone could be next….

Can James stop the killer before they strike again?

The first in a new series, Alex Pine has written a dark, atmospheric crime novel, set in a snowed-in Cumbrian village, for fans of Val McDermid, Ross Greenwood and LJ Ross.

As mysteries go, very predictable. But the characters are decent and well written. If the sequel books go on sale I'll probably get them.

Nothing new, but well written

The actual plot is pretty good. I like a good procedural. The procedure, however, needs to be balanced with the characters, especially if it’s going to be a series. This was a little too much procedure, not enough character. I found the two main characters, DI Walker & his wife, pretty dull. The wife is too skittish. And, Walker kind of falls into the answer rather than really figuring out what’s going on. If I get into a series, it’s because I’m invested in the characters. These two haven’t done it.

Narrator was fine, not great. Pleasant voice and could tell the characters apart, But didn’t convey suspense when it was called for.

Not bad, not great

I don't believe it's the narrator’s fault I think post-production is to blame. Either way I couldn't get past that. Even if the story was better I don't think I could rate this any higher.

Don't listen if you don't like mouth sounds.

The story as really quite bad but the narration took it to another level. Talk about monotone! Not sure if another narrator could have saved this story but this one really didn’t help it in any way. There were so many times I wanted to quit but I’m not a quitter.

Horrible

One of the worst written books I have ever read, so freakin boring, unimportant details. This was my first audible and I kept falling asleep. Tried another thankfully and it’s soooo much better
