Mrs. Emerson, widowed with seven adult children, lives alone in crumbling Victorian mansion outside Baltimore with only a collection of antique clocks to keep her company. Elizabeth Abbott - 23 years old, aimless, bohemian, and beautiful - leads a vagabond lifestyle until she happens upon Mrs. Emerson's home and convinces the older woman to hire her as a handyman.

When three of the strange, idiosyncratic Emerson children return to their childhood home for a visit, they are irresistibly drawn to Elizabeth. With wondrous observations and bittersweet humor, Tyler shows how this unsuspecting young woman becomes the North star that helps a stumbling, dysfunctional family find its footing.

I hated the narrator. Her whiny Southern accent was grating throughout the entire book. It really was unnecessary and signaled her feelings about the character, Mrs. Emerson. She used it for other characters as well.

The writing kept me involved.

I thought it would be a really good story. I thought there would be more that would happen actually with Elizabeth and Matthew. The mother wore me out. Probably as much as she wore out her children!

I live Ann Tyler books…but not this one! What a depressing story with unlikable characters and voices that grated and whined throughout! Still shaking my head about all of it!

Not my favorite!

Excellent

Another interesting Tyler tale. She can draw you into the most unusual family like a spider. Weaving the threads together from all the corners and edges.

Characters

Anne Tyler’s characters are so vividly developed that I aways miss being with them when the story ends.

I loved this book! The way the story was told with the southern drawl was fantastic. The story was so well written and very relatable.

Such a great story

Very different than other Anne Tyler books in my opinion. There was a William Faulkner quality to this family.

Couldn't stop listening

I kept hoping it was going to happen and realized that it was actually a surreal description of a horrible family
