About this listen

Mrs. Emerson, widowed with seven adult children, lives alone in crumbling Victorian mansion outside Baltimore with only a collection of antique clocks to keep her company. Elizabeth Abbott - 23 years old, aimless, bohemian, and beautiful - leads a vagabond lifestyle until she happens upon Mrs. Emerson's home and convinces the older woman to hire her as a handyman.

When three of the strange, idiosyncratic Emerson children return to their childhood home for a visit, they are irresistibly drawn to Elizabeth. With wondrous observations and bittersweet humor, Tyler shows how this unsuspecting young woman becomes the North star that helps a stumbling, dysfunctional family find its footing.

Anne Tyler’s characters are so vividly developed that I aways miss being with them when the story ends.

I live Ann Tyler books…but not this one! What a depressing story with unlikable characters and voices that grated and whined throughout! Still shaking my head about all of it!

Not my favorite!

If you love slow paced, character driven, family centric stories, Anne Tyler should be a go to!

Anne Tyler is my favorite

Very different than other Anne Tyler books in my opinion. There was a William Faulkner quality to this family.

Couldn't stop listening

I kept hoping it was going to happen and realized that it was actually a surreal description of a horrible family

Too many words

Torture to finish. The last Chapter was a complete waste of time and comes out of nowhere. This author is not one that I will give another chance.

The worst. So typical Tyler. Boring.

Usually I'm a big fan of Anne Tyler, but I found this book very depressing and returned it in Chapter 5. Perhaps the ending would be uplifting, but the journey to get there is not worth it.

I read everything I can get my hands on by and Tyler and I am never disappointed until I read this book, the Clock Winder. The storyline was slow, mundane, and the characters while different in terms of personality, which is something I usually love about her characters, were all just weird, and the mother was so creepy and whiny. She made me want scream at her and tell her to ‘Just shut up.’

Shocked this is an Anne Tyler
