About this listen

Charlotte Emory has always lived a quiet, conventional life in Clarion, Maryland. She lives as simply as possible and one day decides to simplify everything and leave her husband. Her last trip to the bank throws Charlotte's life into an entirely different direction when a restless young man in a nylon jacket takes her hostage during the robbery - and soon the two are heading south into an unknown future and a most unexpected fate in Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anne Tyler's skillful seventh novel.

Lovely writing

I liked the descriptions of feelings and observations on life. Not my favorite of Anne Tyler's but still really touching.

Book vs Movie

I prefer the movie story line but I did like how detailed the book was with Charlotte's story. But the book made Jake out to be much more mean than he really was.

Like an old blanket

I had read a lot of Anne Tyler's books 20+ years ago but thought I had read them all at one point. Glad to find a few new ines and this one did not disappoint. As always, the main character's inner turmoil is at the forefront and this story of a wife and mother who had had enough is so timely. Thoroughly enjoyed!
