About this listen

“Jennifer Pickens provides a nuanced narration of Clover that perfectly mirrors the character’s journey—gentle, compassionate, anxious, and full of joy.”—Library Journal

This program features a bonus conversation between the author and narrator.

What’s the point of giving someone a beautiful death if you can’t give yourself a beautiful life?

From the day she watched her kindergarten teacher drop dead during a dramatic telling of Peter Rabbit, Clover Brooks has felt a stronger connection with the dying than she has with the living. After the beloved grandfather who raised her dies alone while she is traveling, Clover becomes a death doula in New York City, dedicating her life to ushering people peacefully through their end-of-life process.

Clover spends so much time with the dying that she has no life of her own, until the final wishes of a feisty old woman send Clover on a trip across the country to uncover a forgotten love story—and perhaps, her own happy ending. As she finds herself struggling to navigate the uncharted roads of romance and friendship, Clover is forced to examine what she really wants, and whether she’ll have the courage to go after it.

Probing, clever, and hopeful, The Collected Regrets of Clover turns the normally taboo subject of death into a reason to celebrate life.

Editorial Review

A life-affirming listen
Much like Clover, the antisocial yet endearing death doula at the center of this heartfelt debut, my undying desire to console and comfort others, often at my own expense, absolutely stems from my personal fixation on mortality. Much unlike Clover, on the other hand, watching others pass away has always been my greatest fear. Nonetheless, in a world where loss remains an inevitability, I believe that confronting our relationships with what we can and cannot control can provide each of us with a deeper appreciation for being alive. In recent months, I have been thrilled to witness the incredible traction that the Death Positive movement has gained, supported along in its journey by such beautiful narratives as Mikki Brammer’s ultimately life-affirming novel. —Haley H., Audible Editor

Honestly, it’s not easy reading a book about death. BUT it’s worth it! Especially a fiction book about the dignity of life and death. I’ll be thinking about Clover and her friends and clients and my friends and family, what we can say and face and what we can’t, for a long time. Narration well done!

This book has become one of my top favorites of all time. Since the first few seconds of the book, I could hardily stop listening. I can’t wait to read this book for a second time. I don’t know how many times I’ve cried, laughed, and had a heart filled with overwhelming joy while reading this book. I’d recommend this book to anyone dealing with any types of troubles big or small. The author dives into family struggles, death, friendship, relationships, loneliness, self development, growth, and so much more!!! This book has lessons and wisdom that could be passed down for years and decades to come. I hope to find another book as excellent and thought provoking as this one!! BRAVO!

Great book for thoughts on death. It is at the end of this life one may have regrets to how they may have lived. Everyone should have thoughts on how they would like their life remembered. A legacy may answer many unanswered questions one day.

Beautifully sweet without being too predictable, this is for anyone who has grappled with loss and finding a way to move on, as I know we all have. I very much enjoyed this book.

Lovely story about death and life

One of the best books I’ve read. Witty, heart warming and full of emotion, the author showcased the beauty and complexity of life and death through the story of Clover, a mid-thirty year old in NY who works as a death doula.
