About this listen

Roland Wilson is a haunted man.

A decade since his last successful gallery showing, Roland’s life has crumbled. Imprisoned by his own mind and taunted daily by painful memories, he finds his only comfort in drinking. With a life that has devolved into nothing brighter than variants of gray, he sees little point in his existence when a delivery boy with eyes of inspirational blue shows up at his door.

Adonis Smith wants something he can’t have.

In his mind, Adonis lives up to his name. He’s six feet tall and built like a god, but in reality he’s just Donny - a short, nothing-special twink that no one takes seriously in or out of bed. Then he meets Roland, a beautiful, yet brash, struggling artist who is consumed by his own shortcomings. Donny knows he shouldn’t get involved with the handsome and tempestuous man, but the more Donny sees of him, the more he wants Roland to be his...for good.

A mutual inspiration.

As the feelings between the two men develop into something colorful and vibrant, it seems each has finally found what he needs. When Roland enters a spiral of self-destruction, it derails his relationship with Donny and sends them both into a tailspin. On their own, each man will need to decide if he is strong enough to stand beside the other and face the future together.

Will they be able to rediscover the best parts of each other before the colors between them fade for good?

The Colors Between Us addresses what it's like to live with depression and may be triggering for some listeners.

This is a beautiful story and one of Kate Hawthorne's more underrated novels..give this one a chance and see how this wonderful story unfolds! She is masterful at developing storylines and this book is just amazing in that respect! The characters are well developed and intriguing..this is one of my favorite Hawthorne novels with good reason :) Kenneth Obi did a wonderful job bringing these guys to life.

Emotional

This book really gave me all the feels. I was thrilled when this came out on audio and it was like re-living Donny and Roland’s story all over again. Roland’s battle with depression really grabbed at me. It felt like a very accurate portrayal of emotions. You really couldn’t help but feel his pain and artistic anguish. Donny was just what Roland needed to emerge. But wait! It’s not just sadness, there is some amazing sexy times too! Holy hotness. This book is going to take you on an emotional roller coaster and it’s worth it from beginning to end. Whether book or audio, this is a fantastic story.

Great book, Great narration

I really liked Kenneth Obi’s reading of this book. He really brought both Donnie and Roland alive, well done.

(This review is the same one I did for the book)

Donnie (don't call him Adonis) has a full life, his sister, 3 cats. He looks like a twink. Which causes a few issues, but he sets guys straight right away. He is the top in the relationship. Doesn't matter if he's not tall or big, he calls the shots. Overall a busy full happy life, then he meets Roland.

Roland is an artist, no longer able to paint. He doesn't know if it's the vodka, depression or just because he doesn't deserve it anymore. Childish drunken tantrums seem to be his only outlet. Then he meets Donnie and Pete the cat.

Their path is full of broken canvases and uncertainty. Roland is sure he doesn't deserve the the happiness of Donnie and painting. Donnie wants Roland but not the turmoil he brings to the relationship.

I've never associated a book to a color before. It started with Roland obsessively trying to find the right shade of blue. At the time not realizing why he needed to find it so bad. I could see it as it flowed through the pages. Sometime just a wisp of color, other times wide swathes. And as an added bonus the cover is phenomenal.

Don't let this one pass you by because it deals with depression. It's a beautiful book.

Definitely a difficult book.

Roland’s struggle with his depression is one of the main elements in the book: his incapability of admitting he needs help and his constant putting himself down and pushing everyone away is really painful.
Donny is a strange character… he comes on so strong in the beginning, defying and antagonizing Roland and demanding what he wants, but as their relationship goes on his vulnerability shows more and more and he comes off as almost meek.
I cannot say this is my favourite book from Kate Hawthorne , but it’s an enjoyable story, narrated by an amazing talent like Kenneth Obi.

Can't wait for the next.

Another great one by Kate Hawthorne and narrated by Kenneth Obi! Donny and Roland are brought to life in a brilliant way. I loved the story and the voices are true to the characters and you feel like you are right there with them. Each emotion and twist in the story grabs you, tone and flow Obi set is fantastic. Can't wait for the next.

Engaging and deep.

So I really enjoyed this book. Why? Well let's start with the main characters-Adonis knows what he likes while Roland is miserable. They meet and have a very angsty and rocky relationship at the start. With the evolution of both MCs, Hawthorne gives a great dynamic and shows the readers that someone with a lot of demons can and will be loved. Kenneth Obi once again gives us narration gold by bringing Hawthorne's book to life. At times emotional, at times angry, Hawthorne has not only conveyed the manic of both characters, but the love and the colors that lay between them.

Heavy Story

This story was really emotional. The subject matter for this story was heavy and Kenneth conveyed the emotions perfectly.
