About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Virginia Henley transports listeners to Victorian England for this delicious tale. The future Earl of Lichfield, Thomas Anson, is determined to restore his ruined ancestral estate to its former glory. To do this, he’ll need to marry an heiress. The beautiful Lady Harriet Hamilton may be just the woman for the job, but she refuses to marry for anything but true love.

Critic reviews

“The characters are refreshingly fun and the story is a delightful romp from beginning to end, with the perfect balance of impudence and romance.” ( Publisher’s Weekly)

I thought I would like this book, because I usually like Virginia Henley, but this book, at times, just droned on and on with no real direction. I mean everything but the kitchen sink was thrown into this book with useless characters and useless subplots. I still had three hours to go and I felt like I’d already listened to two books worth of storyline. By this point I was done and totally bored. If you like a storyline that never seems to end, this is the book for you. I liked the narrator, but sometimes I had a difficult time distinguishing one character from another. It could be because there were so many tertiary characters it was difficult to keep up with so many people. I would not recommend this book.

Good in parts but quite predictable as these types of books are but I found this one a bit slow - along with the narrator. I doubled up on the speed.

Good enough story, slow narrator

I liked how they met and when they grew up and no longer denied how much they were compatable . They both liked the same things. I loved the nursing that her husband took care of her when she might have died without his constantt care. I also liked the dream she had that confirmed ( to her anyway) that they belonged together.😍😘
