Publisher's summary

You lost your daughter. You will never forgive yourself. And now someone is determined to make you pay … Seventeen years ago, something happened to Jess’s daughter Beth. The memory of it still makes her blood run cold. Jess has tried everything to make peace with that day, and the part she played in what happened. It was only a brief moment of desire … but she’ll pay for it with a lifetime of guilt. To distance herself from the mistakes of the past, Jess has moved away and started over with her family. But when terrifying things begin happening in her new home, seemingly connected to what happened to Beth, Jess knows that her past has finally caught up with her. Somebody feels Jess hasn’t paid enough, and is determined to make her suffer for the secrets she’s kept all these years.

Interesting enough to finish it, but...

I can't say that I liked this one and I wouldn't recommend it. It was depressing, and unbelievable at times, and I didn't like most of the characters. It ties together for a descent ending, but that really wasn't enough.

Mental suspense

Subject material sad but suspense of who is causing the problems kept me listening. Brings to light mental illness and how it can affect people around you.

Not what I expected!

At first I thought, why did I get this book? I didn’t like what happened at the beginning! Then, it got a lot better and I enjoyed it! Full of surprises!

Great Listen

This was a nicely intertwined plot. There were instances where I audibly laughed at a character’s comment in a well defined situation. That was needed in a book where the characters became more intense with each chapter. Never saw ‘the who done it ‘ coming!

Sorry...

I never give bad reviews. This had a lot of great parts but I struggled to finish. The end was mostly a surprise but there was about an easy hour of listening that was almost painful.

wow

Powerful writing. I listened and finished in 3.5 days. Loved it and can say most of her books are winners.

Eh

Some of the character voices were absolutely grating. They were so exaggerated they sounded demonic, which is not what this book is about, so it didn’t really work for me. As for the book itself, it was a bit sad and although I liked the main character okay, I didn’t like anyone else at all, except maybe her dad. Overreactions abound. I didn’t hate the book, it had a solid start.
