The birth of the legend!

War is brewing and the galaxy's only space sheriff and his robot companion will not be enough to contain it. An awesome hero saving the day with dumb luck and unlikely coincidences can only get you so far. But when epic battles loom, epic friends are required.

A hilarious romp through a well-developed world!

Simon Carr delivers another hilarious romp through a well-developed world. Sci-fi, comedy, and a fun adventure awaits you! As always, I look forward to what Simon Carr puts out next! Audio Version: James Lawrence does a great job with the narration and hilarity of this story.

Raucous Science Fiction

Simon Carr has written a creative story featuring a space sheriff who stumbled his way through life, with his robot companion. When war started brewing, Rick has to decide what he needs to do about it. I found this story amusing, but sometimes the humor was crude. There was some profanity also. James Lawrence's narration was fantastic and kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Another hysterical book by Simon Carr

Rick Toenail is the last remaining sheriff in the universe at a time when war is about to break out. His goal, with the help of his robot companion "Botty," is to keep the universe from actually going to war, and things seem to be going okay until he rescues Gina, who is incredibly feisty, and Rick may have just taken on more than he can handle.

I discovered Simon Carr's work with his novel Noobs (which is hysterical, you should totally read and/or listen to it) and have since been working my way through the other items in his catalog of work. I have yet to be disappointed, as he has a way with words, and his imagination brings to life some extremely imaginative worlds and situations. His sense of comedic timing is also spot on. There were several times in this book that I was laughing so hard, that I was nearly in tears. His British humor is dry and sardonic, though he is not above a well-placed (and sometimes just a placed) fart joke. If that is going to offend you, you probably shouldn't listen or read this book; if, on the other hand, you still like to indulge your inner 8-year-old, then this will probably be right up your alley.

As for the narrator, I initially didn't like James Lawrence. But, as the book went on, I realized that had more to do with 1 specific character than his work as a whole. One character is a serpent, and James leaned into that with the voice, using a voice with extended esses and hissing. Though it fits with the character and was well-suited, I just didn't like it. Other than that one voice, James Lawrence was amazing. His narration pulls you right into the story and doesn't let go until the end, which arrives much more quickly than you realize.

I am definitely looking forward to reading and/or listening to more of Simon Carr's books! Hopefully, I get to listen to James Lawrence narrate another, but even if I don't, I know that whoever is narrating will put their own spin on the novel and it will be good.

not bad, but not great

This entry in the series is a little lackluster. Where the first book might have had a thin plot, this one is thinner. The book jumps around to different characters and situations so far, it's hard to keep up with. If you get distracted even for a second, you've lost the flow. The voices are awesome, this narrator does an excellent job here. Again, the series is building up towards a conclusion, so it is required reading in order to get to the end game. Just make sure to devote your entire attention to it, or face the consequences.
