About this listen

The ninth book in the beloved 1797 Club series from USA Today best seller Jess Michaels

Robert Smithton, Duke of Roseford, is known for his lusty appetites and his cold, cold heart. Still, thanks to his title and his fortune, everyone wants him, and he’s bored of it all. He wants something, but he cannot place what exactly that is. Until he meets Katherine, the Countess of Gainsworth.

Married for six months to an old man who died when they were making love, Katherine is just returning to Society. Although scandal follows her, so does interest, as the men of Society wonder about her prowess if it could kill a man. When Robert begins to pursue her, she is horrified. After all, she blames him for the circumstances that sent her into her loveless marriage in the first place.

When Katherine ignores him, Robert only pushes harder, and ultimately she begins to wonder if revenge is a dish best served through desire. What she finds when she touches him at last is pleasure unlike any she’s ever known and a connection she does not wish to feel. Now she must decide if she wants revenge or happiness, and Robert must determine if love is worth fighting for.

Length: Full-length novel.

Heat level: seduction, scandal and lots of sin!

Too many long moments

Got tired of hearing”...for a very long time or...for a very long moment. Other than that the story was okay. It’s the narrator who charms me. She’s excellent

I love this series...

But I have 1 complaint... I wish she would give you some part of the after story. You get some in future books, but it would be nice to have another chapter or an epilogue.

Best of the series!

All of the dukes and duchesses are great, well developed characters. Robert and Katherine are the best. As with all of the 1797 books, this one has lots of heat as well as tender moments.

Boring & Tacky

This book was so full of angst and internal dialogue, I can't understand how the H/H came together. They are both carrying a lot of emotional baggage, it takes a lot to believe they can be good for each other.
this is another Jess Michaels' novel that has the H/H performing oral sex after just a few days together.....especially difficult to believe when the heroine dislikes the hero. They get to be the only 2 single people at a house party, so I guess there is nothing else to do , but have sex. Still not sure at the half way point why they get together, except they must be as bored as I am.
there is a tacky scene when the H/H are hiding behind a curtain and they watch 2 of there friends have oral sex....these regency era men are always on their knees!! Too bad that era is over...
The dialogue is not very inspiring or interesting, except of course, the conversations when they discuss sex. Maybe this is how you build a trusting, long-lasting relationship, but I doubt it.
The narration is terrible. I had to speed it up to 1.5 and it's still a little slow going. 2 hours left and I wish it was over. I can guess at the last few scenes and then the HEA. Probably will stop now.
I can't recommend this except for those like myself that want to finish a series. If that is your feeling about a series, it is the only reason to buy this book. If you have more sense, then don't bother wasting your credit.
