Publisher's summary

Twenty-five years ago, Susan Prentice lost her mother to a tragic accident. Now she is returning home for the first time to Virginia's eastern shores and the ancestral house whose front steps her mother fell down to her death.

Though Susan has little memory of the accident, her arrival has alarmed those who fear what may lie dormant in Susan's memory. But it is her maternal grandmother, Alex Montoro, a proud, intense, aging doyenne of the ballet, who believes that that memory must be unlocked. For Susan is the only living witness to the tragedy - and Alex suspects that her daughter's fall was no accident.

Critic reviews

"One of her best efforts, this carefully crafted novel of psychological suspense by the prolific Whitney, a Mystery Writers of America Grand Master, entices the reader into a series of enigmas." (Publishers Weekly)
"Whitney's 36th mystery suspense is tighter, neater, better than ever." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Energetic and richly textured... If terror and murder can be rendered ladylike, Phyllis Whitney is just the lady to do it." (Atlanta Journal & Constitution

One of my favorite authors

I have read Phyllis A. Whitney books for over 45 years. This book is an enjoyable read; it kept my interest as I tried to figure out who 'done it' and had a surprise ending like many of her books do.

meh

This is not Whitney's best effort - more like bottom 10%. Narrator was ok. Story ok.

No Matter What Family is Family

We can get too tied up inside about the details a family is made up of people choosing to stick together and far less of DNA!

Classic Phyllis Whitney

I've been a fan of Phyllis Whitney for many years. I love everything about her books.
The Ebony Swan, like her others, is filled with foreboding and suspense. Anna Fields has done a wonderful job of of performing it.

Not bad

This book was fairly enjoyable, though flawed. Except for the main character - an aging former prima ballerina - the other characters are pretty one-dimensional; and while the “evil” characters are given pat explanations of why they are evil, they are just a little too OBVIOUSLY evil. Also, the “romance” between two characters is WAY too fast to make sense.

However, the narration is quite good, covering a lot of flaws.

Wow a Phyllis Whitney!

This book was as good if not better than all her novels I’ve read. I’ve been in love with her writing ever since I first read the young adult novel, The Eyes Have It…. Earthquake in SanFrancisco and a fantastic black sculptured cat. She fought my imagination then and has never lost it.
