About this listen

Hollis Sands has never gotten over her husband's death. Ricky had been a famous popular singer, and she wrote her best songs for him. Hollis can't believe he took his own life. Perhaps it was something else...murder.

Finally, at Windtop in Cold Spring Harbor, Hollis finds sanctuary, and begins to put in place the pieces of her life. But strange and frightening things keep happening. Voices sing the song "Rainsong" that she wrote for Ricky. Guitars play from nowhere. Instead of a sanctuary, Windtop has become a trap.

Hollis Sands is no coward. No matter what happens, she is determined to search out the truth. But she does not know how close to death she is.

Surprisingly current except ...

Some stories have a timeless theme to them. This one has love, jealousy, obsession, grief, healing. One of the sub-themes for this book is an environmental awareness and I found that pleasing and surprising. The male/female attitudes were a little dated but not offensive because the heroine was still strong and persistent.
The mystery is twisty and a little surprising. I often solve the mystery before I get to the end of the book and this one kept me guessing until the end.
The narrator’s voice is strong. She did use separate voices for all of the different people. I didn’t like all of the male voices but that is personal preference.

Disappointing Phyllis Whitney

This was the most boring Phyllis Whitney book I’ve ever read and so very much longer than it needed to be. I began to wonder if she was being paid by the word. It was full of too much descriptive detail about unimportant things and way too much repetitive angst. I did not enjoy this narrator’s flat voice nor her various character voices, which mostly just sounded weird to me. I cannot recommend this one.
