About this listen

When Melanie Ross first meets April Hall, she's not sure what to think. What other sixth grade girl wears her blonde hair piled in a twist and flaunts false eyelashes? But when the two girls discover the storage shed outside the A-Z Antiques and Curio Shop, they discover they both love anything to do with ancient Egypt. Soon the friends create the Egypt Game. Dressed up in costumes, they secretly hold ceremonies and dance in the ghostly interior of the shed. As the number of Egyptians begins to grow, so does their fun. Then one day, strange things begin to happen. Soon the players find themselves deep in a dangerous mystery that threatens to end the Egypt Game for good.©1967 Zilpha Keatley Snyder (P)1994 Recorded Books Action & Adventure Fantasy Fiction Growing Up Growing Up & Facts of Life Mysteries Classics

Favourite childhood book brought back to life

We used to read this book so much as kids, we’d play imagination games similar to this so it was like reading about ourselves. I loved hearing it brought back to life in an audiobook.

Surprised I'd never read it before

My 6th grader was assigned this for a book report and I enjoyed going along for the ride very much. I love reading books she reads for school so we can talk about them, especially if I haven't read it myself or it's been years. I thought the book had good layers and discussion topics. I knew of the book from seeing it on shelves over the years, but didn't know anything about it other than that. Going in without preconceived notions helped me pay attention and try to enjoy the storytelling as it unfolded and make some guesses about a few things along the way. It has some 'not always easy to talk about' subjects and I think that is why I enjoyed it so much because they were done well. Though some references are dated after so many years, it was still relatable and made for a lot of great conversations with my kid that I hope continue as she has to finish her report.

Delightful Story

What a nice story!! The characters are well drawn so you have a feel for each of the children as the story unfolds. I really enjoyed Alyssa Bresnahan’s narration style.

Don’t know how I missed this book growing up in the 60’s. I think this would be a great introduction to audiobooks for children but the story isn’t just for kids.

Why would anyone want to ban this?

I kept listening for whatever element caused this book to be targeted for a book ban, and never did figure that out. It’s a fun, quirky story about normal kids who do normal kid things in a normal place. I have no problem with elementary students reading this, and feel a little sad for kids whose parents would deny them the experience..

friendship

The Egypt Game becomes more than a game for this group who becomes friends through an imaginary world based on ancient Egypt. They encounter dangers and face struggles but overcome all odds with the help of the professor and their secret world.

A remarkable read!
