Publisher's summary

Two women, one ancient Egyptian harem, and the daring decision that changed the course of history.

In the opulent court of Egypt’s tenth dynasty, Princess Hagar has always known her destiny. One day, she will marry the Crown Prince Merikare and become the Great Royal Wife, the most powerful woman in Egypt. But dark dreams afflict Hagar the moment she hears of the latest addition to Pharaoh’s harem: The stunning, iridescent Sumerian, Sarai. Princess Hagar feels a powerful presence around the Sumerian woman. Hagar suspects Sarai has brought black magic into the palace - but what can she do to convince Pharaoh?

The intrigue of Pharaoh’s court pales in comparison to that swirling in the Royal House of Women among the wives, children, and concubines of the king. Sarai’s arrival upsets the already precarious balance. Loyalties divide, and betrayal, jealousy, and tragedy plague the once peaceful household. When a series of disasters befalls Egypt, Hagar must make a daring decision, and the stakes could not be higher. She could lose everything - her position, her power, her family, and even her life.

Torn between the silent gods of Egypt and the powerful presence that surrounds Sarai, Hagar’s world falls apart around her. She must acknowledge the terrible price of truth, and decide for herself who she will serve.

Excellent Deep Dive Into a Mostly Untold Story

This book was so well written, and it pulled me in to a story to which I had not given a lot of thought. Seeing what Hagar’s life in Egypt might have looked like was riveting and provided so much cultural context. I really appreciated all of the research that went into building this world in such a robust way. I am so looking forward to reading the next book, and I loved listening to the audio version. I liked the narrator and felt like she added to the story in a beautiful way.

Excellent

This writer filled my heart and mind with joy. The story woven around Hagar is excellent. I was unaware of the possibility of her being royalty but now after doing a little research on my own I choose to believe the historians regarding how Abraham could lie and gained so much even in his lie.

travel to ancient Egypt

Although audiobooks are not my preferred format, the narrator did an excellent job. Several Biblical events are documented throughout the story of Hagar, Sarai, and Abram. During the time of the book, Abram lied about Sarai being his sister and had allowed her to become the wife of the Egyptian king.

Delve into ancient Egyptian time as this story is developed. One small section toward the last fourth of the book had a descriptive scene of molestation on a child that I felt could have been handled with less description.

Surprise find!

This is not a book that I would’ve normally picked up, but I’m glad I did. The story of how Hagar meets Abram and Sarai is wonderful and Lillian Rachel brings the story to life. Can’t recommend enough

A fascinating read on one of the Bible’s strongest women

Such a treasure to read! The author delights with so much rich and historically accurate detail of what life would have potentially been like for the earliest period of Hagar’s life. It’s a story that has truly never been told of such an important leading lady of the Bible. It’s a great read for both Christians and non-Christian’s alike.

Whom Shall You Serve

I've always enjoyed the story of Hagar. This rendering is so expressive and I enjoyed it tremendously. It took me a little bit to get used to the narration (the tone was perfect, but the narrator spoke rather slowly) but I soon became totally immersed and invested.

Lovely Biblical fiction.

Wonderfully delightful story. Holmberg painted vivid imagery, creating a story I couldn't put down.
I hope there's a sequel. I want to hear the rest of the story.

A novel with not much of a story

A framework of history around biblical story of Hagar. The majority of story focused on her finding and feelings for the one true god
