About this listen

Astronauts Jim Parker and Michael Murphy, aboard the space shuttle Charger II, were wrapping up a routine mission. Just prior to re-entry, they encountered a mysterious cloud bank in space and were never heard from again. Two years later, a metal box was unearthed at a construction site in St. Louis. In it was a previously unknown, yet apparently authentic, journal of the historic Lewis and Clark expedition: written by astronaut Jim Parker. Did Parker and Murphy alter history, or did they save it?It's about time: download more of the Expedition series.©2003 Books in Motion (P)2003 Books in Motion Science Fiction

Where does The Expedition rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Easy to listen too, did not want to stop.

What other book might you compare The Expedition to and why?

I am not sure I have read a time travel book that involved the history of the US quite like this.

What three words best describe Maynard Villers’s voice?

The narrators voice was even and well modulated

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes

Any additional comments?

The occasional background squeaking or metallic noise in the recording was distracting. However...

I like all things related to Time Travel, and I thought this one might be a little...dorky? silly? But I was pleasantly surprised. The premise worked and the story was interesting. It also sparked a renewed interest in all things Lewis and Clark related.

This one surprised me

This novel explores the Lewis & Clark Expedition. It was more of a historical story than a time travel story. My only complaint was the narration wasn't the best.

Time Travel meets the Lewis & Clark Expedition

Well, after having read a lot about Lewis and Clark, I found this a good story but it was soooo monotone. It also felt like a tricky way to teach history.

Good History Lesson

There are others who commented the same. I read the premise of the first book, not being aware that there are 8 in the series, and thought: "Great, a nice time-travel story".

NOT!

Allow me to say that as a history lesson, it is quite nice. BUT, since I am a little OCD, I could not get myself to NOT listen to the whole series. So I bought and listened to it all, and it was fine, ok, so-so. I was REALLY miffed that this was a cowboy-western story with a clickbaited title and initial premise of time-travel/sci-fi. This should be categorized as history-drama or western.

I did not want to rate it too badly with the star-system, as I don't think it is a terrible series. It is simply "ok", but the fakery of the initial book's premise was extremely disappointing. I have no reason to trust a future book by this author, and possibly even by Audible for miscategorizing this so.

NOT A TIME TRAVEL SCI-FI BOOK!

If you are looking for a great time travel book--this ISN'T it! From the description of the book that I read before buying it, that is what I thought I was getting; an innovative story about modern technology, space flight, a trip into the past, and a struggle to return to the future. In reality, the book is a historical novel documenting the two and a half year Lewis and Clark expedition that began in 1805, with just the slightest, uninspired sugar-coating of science fiction sprinkled throughout the the book. If you like historical novels (I don't), then you will probably like hearing this book as it plods rather tediously through meeting after meeting with friendly and unfriendly Indians, buffalo an elk hunts, idyllic, G-rated romances between white men and beautiful Indian squaws, and the like. I don't know how accurate the book is in its portrayal of the Lewis and Clark expedition--I don't remember much about it from my high school history book of fifty years ago--but I presume that the basic facts are accurate (excluding the two accidental time-travelers from the future who happened along for the journey.) So if you always wanted to know the details of what occurred on that historic expedition (I could have done without that knowledge myself)--this book is for you.

The narrator was ok, but the quality of the recording was poor--at times it sounded as if it were being recorded in an echo chamber, and at other times you could hear each time the recording was paused or edited during its creation--usually once or twice every sentence.

In fairness, I must say this--despite my negative comments, the book did hold my interest sufficiently that I never considered not finishing the book. Hence my 3-star rather than one-star rating.

Not what it seems

If you could sum up The Expedition in three words, what would they be?

Historical, exciting, wonderment

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Expedition?

The realization that the two astronauts would not be found.

What about Maynard Villers’s performance did you like?

His read is easy to follow and he makes the trip exciting

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but impossible to hear the whole book in one sitting

Any additional comments?

I like to listen to chapters, I look forward to the next one, yes I would like to listen to the book all at once, and since there are others in the series, I am excited to find out what happens to our astronauts in future books.

Historical, humorous, exciting

I liked the idea of joining space and time travel .

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

take a rest listen to a new book then go back and read book two

Did Maynard Villers do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

As well as anyone

Do you think The Expedition needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

What disappointed you about The Expedition?

No what I expected. The time travel aspect is briefly touched on. It is a story about Louis and Clark. No real suspense. The love stories are completely flat to me.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance wasn't bad, just plain.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Boring.

I expected more about time travel.
