About this listen

A city-sized dragon Overlord, a crippled wyrm bent on insurrection, and a sleek shadow dragon determined to protect her family. Does anyone win when catastrophic forces collide?

After the horrors of the Dragon Wars in the distant future, the Earth is ruled by an elite subset of dragons called Overlords.

Khellandrian, a fiercely proud azurite dragon crippled in his youth, leads an insurrection violating the most sacred laws of dragonkind.

Melliaunserah, a sleek beauty of smoke and shadow, is desperate to keep her clan-family safe from the tyranny of the Overlords. From their first meeting, she feels an inexplicable connection to Khell that only grows as time passes.

Caught in a desperate race against time, the unlikely pair struggles to unite unlikely allies and battle unlikelier enemies in their quest to destroy the Overlord.

Will they succeed and overcome the sadistic Overlord, or were they doomed to failure before they even began?

An Excellent tale of Dragons!

The Fall of an Overlord is an excellent tale of dragons! It is also a prequel to the Calamity, which I intend to check out once it becomes available! Kevin Potter already has me hooked into the story and I love it! At first, I assumed this was a fantasy book with dragons in it. All of the characters are dragons! The story takes place in the future, after the humans are no longer around. Dragons from all over conspire to, like the title says, overthrow the sadistic overlord. The author does an excellent job of creating each character and their personalities that you almost forget they are dragons. I honestly can't wait to hear more in this series! Scott Allen does a great job with the narration. His deep voice is perfect for a dragon, although he does very well with the female dragons as well.

Dragon Potlitics and Coup de Gras

3.5 / 5, rounded up

Set in the far future, where humans are gone and dragons rule the world in a feudal system, some dragons are planning how to overthrow their dragon overlord.

This is the first of a series of prequels series/story called The Calamity. This is currently the only book set in the world available in audio

The biggest thing that surprised me was that this is a story wholly of dragons. Not humans with dragons, but only dragons. All the characters are dragons.
The story is well put together. The abilities, strength, weaknesses, nature of the dragons etc all are used well to build the story and to make the actions and events different than if it was humans or humans and dragons. Details of the larger world and social structure are provided as much as they are needed for the story, but clearly showing there is more to this world. The world building is interesting, with it being clear there is more to explore and room to grow.

Narration by Scott Allen is good, and fits the story well. His main narrator voice is clear, well-paced and has depth to it that suits the story. He then provides character voices, inflections and emotions for each of the characters. It makes is both easy and enjoyable to listen to.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

A New World of Dragons!

The Fall of an Overlord written by Kevin Potter is a story that takes place centuries into the future that follows a world void of any and all humans. Dragons are left to rule the new world. “The Fall of an Overlord” is a prequel in the upcoming “Calamity series”.

The story follows the struggle of a needed shift in power, as the current ruling overlord has created quite the dictatorship. As with any repressed people, or in this case dragon, it eventually leads to the need to overthrow the ruler. The dragons seem to possess many of the character traits of the long lost human race which allows for a very dynamic and enjoyable character storyline.

This book is narrated by Scott Allen. He has a rich and powerful voice which couldn't be more ideal for this type of novel! He easily handles a range of character voices that are easy to distinguish and also easy to listen to. He is able to reign in the power of his voice for a soft and smooth storyline narration as well. Scott appears comfortable behind the mic already and currently has a total of 4 narrations available on audible. We will look forward to seeing that number grow!

The story is told well and captures the essence of a dragon society but the audio quality comes into question almost immediately. While the narrated story flows easily there are extraneous background noises here and there that can be slightly distracting. This would be the only negative mark that could degrade the listening experience of the audiobook, however, the story is captivating enough that the extra background noises are rarely noticed.

This audiobook comes in at just under 3 hours. With such a short run time it is often difficult to create a complete storyline but this isn't the case for this novel. Since it is a prequel, it sets up the next books in the series quite well. It takes a unique stance development of a world ruled by dragons! If you have a few hours to burn and enjoy Sci-fi & fantasy this audiobook is a good pick!

Audio quality: 6/10
Narration/performance: 8/10
Storyline: 8/10

A Great Listen

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request, and have voluntarily left this review. I found this tale of the future to be very interesting and a bit upsetting, since humans are gone. Dragons rule the earth and humans are just a memory. Dragons have all the same traits as humans, miss using power included. This is a tale of the weak coming together to defeat the overlord. The heroes are brave and unique. This short story has character and lots of action. It's a great listen if you have a couple of hours to fill.

Wonderful prequel, great world building!

The Fall of an Overlord
A Prequel to the Calamity
By: Kevin Potter
Narrated by: Scott Allen
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
This is an excellent prequel. It lets the listener/reader get to know several things starting with lives, how the dragons live, the neighbors and how they live, the society of dragons, and so much more just from the prequel. Of course we learn about some of the characters that may or may not be in the series. I really enjoyed it. I liked how the author got me to hate the Overlord so quickly and love the underdog so fast. LOL. To cram all the world building in this prequel without describing but just while telling the story was great. Will have to read the next book.
The narrator was excellent. A perfect voice for this book!

A brilliantly performed tale of dragons!

Scott Allen provided a brilliant performance of Kevin Potter’s Fall of an Overlord: A prequel to the calamity!

It’s a deep and atmospheric fantasy story, definitely would recommend it to any fantasy fan who likes tales that are far from ordinary - instead of the usual human story, this is all from the point of view of dragons!

Scott Allen’s voice work was incredible, he performs so many different characters voices - ranging from the ancient to the very young, powerful to the weak, male and female and so on - can’t wait to hear his next title!

Dragons fighting for freedom

Dragons and more dragons who deal with a tyrant that one is brave enough to want to overthrow to give freedom to the other
dragons. First met with resistance not wanting to bring harm to the younger dragons than many side with the revolution. Great description of the different type of dragons.

Excellent introduction

This book is an excellent introduction to the world the Calamity series is set in. During the story you get a fair bit of the history of the world as well as the societal set-up and the social norms.

The dragon characters were really well done and the story is interesting and exciting. I really enjoyed listening to it and I'm looking forward to listening to more of the series.

The narration was excellent, the character voices were really well done, they sounded draconian and delivery was smooth and natural.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher in exchange for an honest review.
