About this listen

Not many people in the medical world are talking about how being afraid can make us sick - but the truth is that fear, left untreated, becomes a serious risk factor for conditions from heart disease to diabetes to cancer. Now Lissa Rankin, MD, explains why we need to heal ourselves from the fear that puts our health at risk and robs our lives of joy - and tells us how fear can ultimately cure us by opening our eyes to all that needs healing in our lives.

Drawing on peer-reviewed studies and powerful true stories, The Fear Cure presents a breakthrough understanding of fear's effects and charts a path back to wellness on every level. We learn:

  • How a fearful thought translates into physiological changes that predispose us to illness
  • How to tell true fear from false fear
  • How to reshape our relationship to uncertainty
  • What our fears can teach us about who we really are

Using exercises from a wide range of mind-body practices and spiritual traditions, Dr. Rankin teaches us how to map our own courage-cultivating journey, write a personalized prescription for courage, and step into a more authentic life.

just the book I was looking for!

I liked that it gave a solution the fear problem. what I liked was the explanation that it gave about that once you stop feeling fear and having hope and love your system relaxes and starts healing itself. I'm halfway in the book but I needed to note this down.

best quote-"when there's setbacks and adversities you just have to see it in a positivity view and say "oh soul growth, let's milk it for all its worth!" 😂

I love the fact that the author mentions miracles and supernatural occurrences.

the only thing I didn't agree with was the breathing in of others stress and sending them peace....I don't think connecting with others stress is a good idea, I felt so heavy.

Starts out well then goes off the rails

The author spends a lot of time in the beginning portions of the book describing how chronic fear and anxiety can have significant negative physical affects (to the point of it killing you). It makes sense and I get it, but the author dragged this point out for way too long. But then the book goes off the rails with story after anecdotal story of ESP and people seeing and hearing things, and being guided essentially by spirits. I thought this was going to be a book that provided tools for dealing with stress and anxiety--not a bunch of spirit stories that the author came across. I rarely give up on books, but I couldn't make it more than halfway through this one.

Scary statistics and supernatural phenomenons

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

First she starts off with a drawn out play-by-play of her own experience of being mugged. Then the first part of her book is slamming statistics of how "anxiety and fear actually kills people." It made me have a great deal of anxiety just by listening to the data. But I'm a fan of Rankin, so I kept listening even though I wanted to stop. Then it got better, more positive. And then midway through her book, she started talking about supernatural experiences that she and others has had. It was creepy... I like to listen to these books before bed in a dark room. With all of the scary information, I just can't listen without getting spooked.

Has The Fear Cure turned you off from other books in this genre?

I think she has good intentions in writing this book, but she gives out these death stats, gruesome stories, supernatural experiences and says, "But don't these things help cure your fears?" And I'm thinking, "No, it just gives me more anxiety and stresses me out!"

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Fear Cure?

I feel this book is hot and cold. In one section, it's scaring me out, then the next she's positive and reassuring, then it's scary again... It doesn't seem to be consistent. I really wanted to like this book...
