About this listen

This snappy, sassy redemption story set in small-town Montana is "a wild and crazy debut novel by a talented young writer" (Jackie Collins), filled with an uproarious and unforgettable cast of characters you won't want to leave behind.

Welcome to Quinn, Montana, population: 956. A town where nearly all of the volunteer firemen are named Jim, where the Dirty Shame - the only bar in town - refuses to serve mixed drinks (too much work), where the locals hate the newcomers (then again, they hate the locals, too), and where the town softball team has never even come close to having a winning season. Until now.

Rachel Flood has snuck back into town after leaving behind a trail of chaos nine years prior. She's here to make amends, but nobody wants to hear it, especially her mother, Laverna. But with the help of a local boy named Jake and a little soul searching, she just might make things right.

In the spirit of Empire Falls and A League of Their Own, with the caustic wit of Where'd You Go, Bernadette thrown in for good measure, Richard Fifield's hilarious and heartwarming debut will have you laughing through tears.

I was not wow'ed

I bought this book because of the number of reviews where people were so impressed with the book, I was not. It wasn't that interesting. The plot seemed very unlikely. Some characters were underdeveloped but it seemed like we were supposed to have strong feelings for them.

I wouldn't recommend this book to a friend, or an enemy. I was disappointed, but I did finish the book.

I didn't want to like this book, but...

it hooked me and pulled me through to the end. The concept seemed sophomoric, and for a long time I didn't like any of the characters very much, but the plot just would not stop and I kept telling myself, "okay, one more chapter," because I really wanted to know what happened next.
Listening to The Flood Girls is in some ways like giving in to the worst kind of gossip. Or it's like watching a soap opera, but grittier than any soap opera yet written.
Kathleen Early's narration is great. Her inflections and crisp consonants are so female that every now and then I'd remember with a little snap of surprise that the author is a man.
And just when you think everyone has turned over a new leaf, it happens. In fewer than 500 words you realize that the story has been fooling you all along. It's not a soap opera at all, but an ancient Greek drama.
I expect more good good stories from Richard Fifield.

The characters!

I really couldn't have loved this book more. Get it. Moving, funny, real. And the narrator was excellent.

Great story, bad ending

Really should have had a better ending. It should have been played out more. It was disappointing for such a good and detailed story line.

Pleasant Surprise

I definitely did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It is very well written and performed. I'm more of a political thriller and suspense fan. This book couldn't be any further from my usual taste but the reviews persuaded me. So glad I gave it a try.

The story was rich with sordid and faulted characters that I grew to love as each

The story was rich with sordid and faulted characters that I grew to love as each chapter was read. While many of the themes within the story were predictable, there were enough twists and one shocker that made it one of the best stories I have listened to in a long while. The narrator was the perfect choice for this story. She brought it to life and kept me interested in it.

"Flood Girls" is Funny, Moving & Novel; a page turner!

I LOVED THIS BOOK BECAUSE...Each relatable character is treated with respect & given a voice; innate abilities & flaws are gradually revealed. There are also characters with purely selfish motives & evil intent; those who manipulate & bully others to get what they want. These characters act against those who get in the way of their ultimate goals, & manufacture the support of dependents too weak to escape their influence & malice. Our heroine finds Love, formed by friendship & shared experiences. The climactic ending is healing & joyful, without forced closure.
