About this listen

When John Sutter's aristocratic wife killed her mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London.

Now, 10 years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant. Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, which had been the family home of his ex-wife, Susan Stanhope Sutter, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan, who has also returned to Long Island.

But Susan isn't the only person from John's past who has reemerged: Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan's ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: Drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father's murderer - Susan Sutter.

At the same time, John and Susan's mutual attraction resurfaces, old passions begin to reignite, and John finds himself pulled deeper into a familiar web of seduction and betrayal.

In The Gate House, a book that is both a sequel to The Gold Coast as well as a suspenseful stand-alone novel, acclaimed author Nelson DeMille brings us back to that fabled spot on the North Shore - a place where past, present, and future collide with often unexpected results.

DeMille's dialog and characters are great!

This is another entertaining book, by a really good writer and very well narrated, a followup of sorts to his much earlier "Gold Coast". DeMille knows Long Island, New York really well and also the lives of the wealthy along the North Shore. This book is actually a very nice love story maneuvering among several problems, all of which are entertaining. But it's DeMille's characters' conversation and thoughts that, to me, are notable and entertaining about this book, in addition to a good story. (However the main character's wise-a** tendencies are a little overdone.)

great sequel to The Gold Coast.

I really enjoyed this book. I reread the Gold Coast before listening to this one and the narrator was the same who does such a great job with the voices. the Gold Coast was one of my favorite Nelson DeMille books, actually it was my first one of his. But it just shows he has not lost his touch. Same mix of humor, story, action, and suspense as well as great character development. I really enjoyed listening to this and it finally felt like it brought a closure to the original story that was not there.

NG!

I was so disappointed by this book. I have read several of Nelson DeMille's books and I know he is good. If this had been the first one I read, it would be the last! I kept waiting for a plot, so I didn't just turn it off, but there never seemed to be one. It was really very boring!

disappointed

It does not suitably follow The Gold Coast. For one thing the first 7-8 hours are wasted in a slow rehash of the prior book and I found that there was just way too much rehashing throughout. Plot and character development are lacking.

Not Bad

Overall I enjoyed this book, although it dragged a tad in the middle. I read the Gold Coast years ago and this was a happier conclusion to that story. I must admit I have a hard time with male readers but thought Christian Rummell did a great job and got the sarcasm of John Sutter just right, not very good with female voices – they all sound like bimbos.

Who says sequels can't be as good?

This is a great listen! After listening to the Gold Coast, I had to follow up with the sequel and it was not disappointing. Mr. DeMille did a terrific job of filling in the blanks from The Gold Coast and picking up a story line that was completely believeable and thoroughly entertaining. Highly reccommend to adult listeners who can deal with the frank realities of the human sexual condition as well as complex and deeply personal struggles with the emotions we are all wired with. Another great listen by Christian Rummel. Superbly narrated.
I would love to see both of these on the big screen with Patrick Warburton playing the role of John Sutter. How awesome would that be! He personifies both John Sutter and John Corey of other DeMille novels which I also highly reccommend.

The Gate House

What can you say, other than DeMille does good work. He brought back characters from 10 years ago and completed the family's mob involvement.

Meh

Since I did somewhat enjoy "The Gold Coast" I thought I'd give this one a try. It's a struggle to get through it, the dripping sarcasm is tedious and silly. And the story is just ludicrous. And long and, did I say, boring?
A total waste of the 22 hours.

Great Followup

Although the story goes on and on it continues to capture your interest all the way. I find it very hard to enjoy a follow up as much as the first however this is a close second. And, don't discount the reader who contributes a star the overall performance and story.

Not entorely successful

I really enjoyed listening to the Gold Coast and some other of NelsonDeMille's books like Plum Island. He generally writes good stories and interesting characters. I thought the reader added a lot to The Gate House but the story and pace were uneven. Parts were so interesting but other parts dragged for me. Not one of my favorites but worth finishing.
