About this listen

Evolutionary science teaches that humans arose as a population, sharing common ancestors with other animals. Most readers of the book of Genesis in the past understood all humans descended from Adam and Eve, a couple specially created by God. These two teachings seem contradictory, but is that necessarily so? In the fractured conversation of human origins, can new insight guide us to solid ground in both science and theology?

In The Genealogical Adam and Eve, S. Joshua Swamidass tests a scientific hypothesis: What if the traditional account is somehow true, with the origins of Adam and Eve taking place alongside evolution? Building on well-established but overlooked science, Swamidass explains how it's possible for Adam and Eve to be rightly identified as the ancestors of everyone. His analysis opens up new possibilities for understanding Adam and Eve, consistent both with current scientific consensus and with traditional readings of Scripture. These new possibilities open a conversation about what it means to be human.

In this book, Swamidass untangles several misunderstandings about the words human and ancestry, in both science and theology; explains how genetic and genealogical ancestry are different; and explores implications of genealogical ancestry for the theology of the image of God, the fall, and people "outside the garden".

Such a humble thought experiment explaining how evolution and creation can both be true. This is a book that will open one’s eyes!

Incredible!

I understand Swamidass' attempt to reconcile mainstream science and theology, but at the end it comes off as a book that L. Ron Hubbard and Joseph Smith would fantasize over.

Interesting thought experiment

Thought provoking book that proposes a historical Adam consistent with both the Bible and modern science.

Provocative, insightful, and challenging.

I found the last section the most helpful. If you dont know if you'll have time to listen to the whole book or feel lost in the science, listen to section 5 for a powerful overview.

Helped me see another's point of view

Love the insight and provoking to deeper reconciliation of science and biblical truth. Fearless pointing out facts that get conveniently ignored, and bringing good “secular” science to the forefront.

Speaking openly about biblical and scientific truth…

great book for those trying to understand how science and Scripture can work together. If you think evolution is incompatible with Scripture, this will cause you to think and consider if God used evolution to bring things about. Great research and easy to read.

Great and Challenging

A very thorough examination of how the Adam and Eve narrative could still be true simultaneous with evolution. Narration was a little slow and subdued but eventually I got used to it.

Interesting

I appreciate how the author’s theory can help us reconcile our scientific findings with our beliefs and philosophies. The narration was only a bit lacking in that it did not pause between titles and the beginning of paragraphs.

This book is absolutely written by a scientist and it is thus highly technical. It may prove difficult if the reader is not at least somewhat familiar with biology, the scientific method and some mathematics. Overall it was very well done.

Fantastic

is it true? I don't know but it sounds believable with the knowledge we have available now. who knows what may become known in the future. who knows what God is capable of doing, we see is supernatural.

I think this book is truly groundbreaking. It opens up an avenue towards mutual understanding and dialogue concerning the historically divisive topic of Adam and Eve. I sincerely appreciate Dr. Swamidass’ humble approach to this sensitive topic and I consider this book to be a genuine service to the church. Thank you.
