About this listen

"I didn't really understand what love was. I didn't know what it meant, that I should've fought harder for it."

Banished from home by her angry father, Julia Devon travels to Bath to fulfill her role as family spinster by assisting her cousin, Lady Macon, in caring for her dying husband.

Nathaniel Hastings's life runs in a predictable pattern, until a routine visit to one of his ailing patients brings him face to face with Julia, the woman who broke his heart five years before in London.

Julia and Nathaniel find themselves unlikely allies as they work together to tend to the family's needs, fend off Lady Macon's scheming brother-in-law, and avoid confronting the pain of their shared past. But could this accidental meeting be their second chance at love?

The narrator does an excellent job of bringing this story to life. The main characters were well thought out and very likeable. This was an enjoyable book and I'm looking forward to reading/listening to more books by this author.

The story was a somber one. Dealing with death and family trouble but ended beautifully. It is a sweet romance amongst the turbulent ups and downs of a dying side character. Bittersweet tale with a happy ending.

Strong women & turbulent times.

Nice story. Sweet 2nd chance live. VERY chaste. only issue was there was a bit of a cliffhanger over what happened to her cousin's estate. possibly addressed later in series?

When I read the first book in the series I felt so bad for the eldest sister, Julia. Her father was such a nasty man and Julia was treated like a slave after she failed to appease her father’s wishes of an “acceptable” match during her first season in London. During that book we did find out that there was a man that she met and had feelings for but, again, when the young man asked her father to be permitted to court her, her father was rude and condescending and would not permit them to see each other. After the happenings in Book 1, the remaining sisters, Julia and Rebecca were split up and sent away from home; Rebecca, the youngest, to London to live with her aunt and Julia, to Bath, to help her cousin. Little did her father know that the young man, now a physician, was no longer in London but also lived in Bath and just as it happened in London, they again run into each in Bath. And so the story goes. And a very touching, funny, sad, happy, and dynamic story it is too. As brilliant as Book 1, Book 2 is more than worth the time and effort to listen to. The story draws you in and holds onto you for the duration. The characters are wonderful and remind you of real people. And the plot of the story involves real people with real life scenarios. It is even better than Book 1 which was also excellent. The narrator was wonderful also.

And the Devon sisters’ stories continue…

It was a bit slow at times but I liked the sweet nature of the main characters. I liked that the physician was so well respected that his patients were all rooting for him to succeed in love. That was very cute.

I have read most of Sally's work. I appreciate her consistency to provide clean Sweet love stories. Her books are always well researched and informative. I also celebrate her growth as her most recent books provide the reader with far more. Can never go wrong with Sally.
