About this listen

The first kiss crumbles her world. The second mystifies. The third unbalances. The fourth sends her reeling. And the fifth - ah, the fifth....

Inspired by Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, Miss Sarah Meacham has always behaved circumspectly, until an emotional outburst directed at a well-deserved gentleman earns her the nickname of Miss Shrew. As a result, she vows to never trust - or love - again. But when her father decrees that her younger sister cannot marry the man of her dreams, until Sarah has secured a suitor of her own, she is faced with a dilemma: deny her sister marital bliss or feign an interest in the next gentleman to come along, at least until their father relents.

Mr. Ian Collum is no gentleman. A tradesman and newcomer to Brighton, he has been searching high and low for the perfect house. When he at last discovers Ivy Cottage, with its magnificent views, extensive lands, and a large oak tree reminiscent of his favorite childhood escape, he will do whatever it takes to obtain it. Trouble is, the owner of the property will only sell if Ian agrees to court the beautiful and infamous Miss Shrew - a woman as intent on eluding Ian as he is on pursuing her.

My first book by this author. Thoroughly diverting and enjoyable. As always, the fabulous Justine Eyre narrates beautifully.

good clean regency

What a fun nod to The Taming of the Shrew! I quite enjoyed this retelling.

After badly handling being mistreated by a gentleman Sarah is labeled Ms Shrew and swears off men. When her younger sister is ready to marry her father says she can not marry unless her older sister agrees to start letting gentleman court her again. Enter Mr. Collum who wants to purchase a house from said younger sister's almost fiance, Mr. Giles. Mr. Giles agrees to sell it if Mr. Collum will agree to try courting Sarah.

It really was a fun story and very well done. My favorite part was the "redecorating" and then the elpilogue. So funny!

I also recommend the audible version. The narrator did a good job.

Thoroughly Enjoyable

I enjoyed the story and the pace. it's not the most "exciting" read, but a sweet story and great character development.
The narrator is fantastic. She brought the story to life.

Entertaining and Sweet

This lovable story redeemed The Taming of the Shrew in my opinion. The framework of the Shakespeare's story was present but the characters were not only funny but respectful to one another. I also appreciated that the story remained lighthearted even at its most conflicted areas. This is due in small part to the frequent use of humor and the narrator's performance of it. Her blend of a Scottish-English accent was well done too. This was a very enjoyable read for me.

Romantic and Funny

This was a really fun and very romantic story. I love Ian and Sarah both as individuals and as a couple. I really enjoyed the way this slow burn romance developed as well as lots of humor along the way.

Highly recommend this one as well as the audible version of it!

Loved it!

It had been a while since I had read a book from this author. I loved it from the start. Just the right comedy and romance. But most importantly, this was a clean read!

what a fun listen

what a fun book! fun and well developed characters, fun plot, a fun set up of 5 kisses breaking up the book.

first, the main are characters are so well done. that's what makes or breaks a book in my eyes and these are sooo well done. they don't feel like every other main leads in all other books, but also they feel like people who could have existed in real life. they always behaved as themselves, there was never any confusion as to "why did they do this or that?" that's what really makes a story for me. the male lead was so charismatic, but in a real and comfortable way. he just seems like someone you'd want to know in real life, whether as a mate, neighbor, friend, brother, whatever. just a person you'd want to know and have around and hang out with. and the same can be said for the female lead, and even the secondary characters. so there was no boring parts in this book. you feel like another person hanging out with them, and it's awesome.

the plot is fun and interesting and not complicated. but it's engaging and moves along. just the kind of read for when you don't want to be stressed out by unnecessary drama or problems. the book ends before you know it, because you're having fun with it. however it does not feel rushed. you really get to enjoy the couple spending time together and getting to know each other.

I'm not an expert on 19th century society so I can't speak too much on the accuracy of things, but it was all believable enough for me.

the narration was superb! this narrator is so good in my opinion. she switches well between accents and male and female voices and even makes the characters different enough that you could probably know who's talking without the book telling you. I'm going to start looking for her other narrations and check them out.
